2017 trades not involving the Nats
« Topic Start: July 18, 2017, 09:03:31 PM »
JD Martinez to AZ confirmed.

Todd Frazier pulled from the lineup.  Rosenthal reporting Frazier, Robertson, and Kahnle are heading to NYY.  Some of this is playing keep away bullpen and 3d base help from the Division leader.

2016 1st rounder Blake Rutherford is part of the package. He's an awesome kid.

Doesn't help their starting pitching which is the real problem.

Clippard going to the White Sox as part of the Robertson-Frazier-Kahnle deal.

Not really. They have a 40-man roster logjam after this season (hence, Clarkin). They have a ton of OF prospects/young players (Frazier, Judge, Hicks, Fowler, Florial).

Rutherford has a .740 OPS in Charleston so far, he's far from a bust obviously but there is a place the NYY could deal from - Outfield - and not feel the pain anytime soon. Robertson and Kahnle will be in the majors next year and help make the bullpen ridiculous again.

I also think they have a few prospects they could deal (Mateo, for example) in a trade for Sonny Gray that would help them in 2017 and 2018 and beyond. They need SP for the long haul and dealing some guys for Gray makes a lot of sense.

As a White Sox/Nationals fan this is a very disappointing trade. Disappointing from the Sox perspective because Rutherford is not as good as other prospects that were rumored. Disappointing from the Nationals perspective because it's now obvious that the barrier to the Nats getting Robertson (and Kahnle, who is having an amazing year) was money, not minor league talent.

Rutherford is really, really good. Top-30 prospect in baseball. Nothing to turn your nose up at.

day after Rafael Devers's debut, Red Sox trade for Eduardo Nunez.  I don't know anything about the minor league pitchers.

So who can make sense of Yu Darvish's no-trade clause?

He can be traded to any team except BAL, BOS, CHC, CLE, COL, CWS, DET, OAK, PIT, TOR.

Twins seem like a big omission if the problem is playing outside in the cold.

Those are all either hitters parks or crappy ballparks. Maybe he has an ex in Pittsburgh or something.

Wow.  The Rockies must have a deep system.  Here is what I found on mlb.com about the three in the trade.  In any event, Neshek is due to level off some in the second half.

"The Phillies, looking for prospects they do not have to protect on their 40-man Major League roster this winter, received infielder Jose Gomez, 20, and right-handers J.D. Hammer, 23, and Alejandro Requena, 20.
Gomez has hit .324 in 81 games at Class A Asheville and was a midseason South Atlantic League All-Star. Hammer, a 24th-round pick in the 2016 Draft, has made 36 combined relief appearances at Asheville and high Class A Lancaster (4-2, 2.36 ERA), and was a California League All-Star at Lancaster. Requena went 8-3 with a 2.85 ERA in 19 starts at Asheville, where he was an All-Star."

Lucas Duda to the Rays. In return, the Mets get RHP  Drew  Smith, an AA/AAA reliever with 1.60 ERA, 0.91, 8 ER, 9Bb WHIP over 45 innings this year. Kinda feels like the Rays are overpaying a bit but I don't know how badly they need a rental 1B. Duda is batting .246 this year but slugging at .588.

how many Ks?

The Rays are only a game behind Boston so have a couple of ways to make the playoffs.  A win or two is worth a lot to them.
