I played little league in Bangkok around that time. The field had ponding water and poisonous snakes for half the year 
We had one new field in Arlington where they apparently forgot to scrape out the construction gravel in the outfield. Every dive for a ball you came up with gravel entrenched in your elbows. It built character, though not as much as poisonous snakes.
