Michael Taylor or Brian Goodwin?
« Topic Start: June 14, 2017, 05:36:25 PM »
KV brough it up in the Game Thread, but Goodwin has 4 homers in 58 at bats this season. Taylor had a torrid couple of weeks, but seems to have regressed to what he is at this point.

So, with Werth coming back soon, who should be the every day CFer?

Brian Goodwin: .271/.323./576 with four homers, 22% strikeout rate, 7.9% walk rate, 1 SB
Michael Taylor: .261/.296/.449 with six home runs, 32% strikeout rate, 4.8% walk rate, 4 SB

Defensively, there isn't much to go on for Goodwin, as he hasn't played much CF at the major league level. Still, he has spent significant time in CF in the minors and is likely athletic enough to play CF.

Taylor has played pretty well in CF. I think defensively he is better, but not by a whole lot.

Who you got? When Werth comes back, who should be the every day CFer? Or should they be platooned?

Comparison as of June 16, 2017

Goodwin: 26 games, 0.6 WAR; .277/.324/.585; BB rate:7.0%; K rate: 22.5%; ISO:.308; wRC+: 124
Taylor: 54 Games, 1.0 WAR; .261/.295/.461; BB rate: 4.7%; K rate: 32.6 %; ISO: .200; wRC+: 94

I'll be surprised if Taylor gets a single vote.

Well, I was in the Goodwin camp all off-season. No reason to let Taylor's or Goodwin's reality change my mind.

I still believe Taylor's SLG and batting average is driven by a .360 BABIP.  Goodwin's BABIP, BB%, and K% look sustainable, while Taylor still has a K problem.  My head prefers Goodwin, but options and the like make me think Taylor is the guy to go with. Play them both enough to see if there's some trade interest..

I haven't seen enough of Goodwin to form an opinion on this.

I'm with you on this.    Michael A. Taylor had magical moments as well.

I guess that's an argument for giving Goodwin playing time and seeing what we've got...

I want it to be goodwin, but I think a platoon is the more realistic projection.

At least to start, if Goodwin keeps hitting well, he could run away with the job. He'll get plenty of chances early against the RHP side of the platoon.

If you pick one or the other, no. If you platoon .... Yes, he'd have to be.

Heisey is on a farm with Nate McLouth and Read Johnson.

Well, you carry 5 OFs - Werth, Harper, Goodwin, Taylor, & Heisey - 6 infielders - the starters plus Lind and Drew, and 2 catchers.  Who am I forgetting?

I want to like Koda Glover. He swaggers like Famous Firemen of Old. He pitches like Bunky Stewart, though.

When you see those 8 names, all you can do is cringe. I don't have any faith or trust in any of them. Not a single one! More importantly, I don't think the team, coaches, manager, GM or owners do either.

it will for a while. It has to. They're so bad they're going to go through a lot of innings. Roark and Ross aren't helping.

Yup.  And I support it too.  Goodwin plays every OF position and Drew plays every IF position.  You sacrifice a pinch hitter per game.

I get why people make jokes about Michael A. I was frustrated too, but he has shown some very nice glimpses. I would definitely stay the course with him unless he is really struggling over a longer period

I like the kid and I am pulling for him and I think right now, he is the best option.

I think he has benefited greatly from regular playing time. Right now He's an adequate center fielder. Hopefully he will improve even more on that.

Hell, his stat line for June is almost identical to Bryce's

Well that's only mild concern for Bryce. Meanwhile, Goodwin in June: .317/.370/.732
