Harper, 2016 Repeat?
« Topic Start: June 05, 2017, 11:33:05 PM »
Is it happening again? A torrid start to the season at the plate and then a free fall. He looks tentative and you can't blame the suspension because the slump started long before then.

Too early to tell. I predict he hits a HR today to throw this discussion off base..

Dunno, Harper is slashing .167/.444/.167 since coming back, while Tebow is slashing .167/.375/.167 in the same time frame

One of them is facing minor league pitching. Get off of Tebow's nuts.

I'm thinking it's more likely that he is a streak hitter and is currently in a slump.  HIs timing is definitely off.  Every time I see him foul off a ball that's in his wheelhouse, I think of what Dusty said about him last year -- and how he wasn't missing those earlier this season.

Its amazing to me that people still don't understand the ebbs and flows of a 162 game season.

If a guy hits .300, that doesn't mean he goes 1 for 3 everyday...

We're all football fans. We treat everything like we would treat a football game/season.

Well no, if he were to go 1 for 3 everyday he'd be hitting .333.

His avg is dropping like a rock. Despite the recent hitting streak, you can't maintain a .300 avg w/ only 1 hit per game.

.268/.361/.451 in June

I just don't think he's able to stay consistent.

We were on a long road trip. Now we got a day off and back at home tomorrow. I predict a hot streak coming starting this weekend.

I think too many people make excuses for Harper's inconsistency.  Remember, we're talking about the guy who many people thing might get the biggest contract in history.   I have serious reservations about us paying him the kind of money people are talking about.

That 2016 "slump" lasted for months! Excellent player, yes. Superstar, still questionable. Is he Mark Teixiera (Pinstripes part of his career)?

Superstar isn't really in question. The way the media treats him, the endorsements he gets, the way he's booooed across the country, the way he is the leading vote getter in the All-Star Game (I think...) and his flare for the dramatic makes him a superstar. The question is whether or not he'll be a hall-of-famer. That's still to be determined. He's a super star. That encompass a lot more than what happens on the field and he checks all the boxes.

Depends on how you define "superstar".  To me, it's based on performance.

I think that's a pretty narrow definition. You can be a superstar without any real signifcant performance. (See: The Kardashians)

So "superstar" included buffoons and clowns?

Bryce Harper is a 24-year-old with 139 career homers, a career 140 OPS+, an MVP award, and is currently OPS'ing over 1. Not to mention he's one of the most recognizable faces and names in American sports.

"Not a superstar."

:lmao:

We don't freaking deserve him.
