Can't agree with this - who's better ?

Are you surprised someone named Slumpbuster has a recency bias?

Not enough data.  I wouldn't even compare MAT defensively with BH.  How does one incorporate the number of intentional walks ?

MAT since April 29th when he took over full time: .281/.316/.511

Bryce Harper since April 29th: .261/.358/.497

Superstar isn't really in question. The way the media treats him, the endorsements he gets, the way he's booooed across the country, the way he is the leading vote getter in the All-Star Game (I think...) and his flare for the dramatic makes him a superstar. The question is whether or not he'll be a hall-of-famer. That's still to be determined. He's a super star. That encompass a lot more than what happens on the field and he checks all the boxes.

Poor choice of words I guess on my part. Clearly, I meant "superstar" in relation to on-the-field performance.

No crap it's not enough data :) How much data do you think you'd need before you concluded that a defense-first CF was a better hitter than a former MVP who'd put up a 10-WAR offensive season? I'm just pointing out that it's funny that Bryce's *cold* streak has directly coincided with MAT's hot streak.

MAT since April 29th when he took over full time: .281/.316/.511 OPS .827

Bryce Harper since April 29th: .261/.358/.497  OPS .855

 :couch:

Guess it depends on if you like modern stats or not as to who's better in that stretch.

Harper wRC+ 114
Taylor wRC+ 111

100 is average. For reference Anthony Rendon's over this stretch is 176 (7th in baseball). Aaron Judge is 204 (2nd to Trout, who has missed many games.)

They are essentially the same player over that stretch.  I do not think this is true overall, by any stretch

I didn't want to give Harper a mega contract after 2015.

Now imagine him having one of these long good but not great .800 OPS streaks when making $30 million a year. Or imagine if he ever repeated 2016. It would be brutal.

Zman, Murphy for sure. Rendon and Turner are doing as much for the team right now. I wish he would shut me the hell up and break out but i think i saw this movie last year.

Pudge Rodriguez once had a game winning single for the Nats.

Need consistent production.

Why would anyone throw anything BUT a curve ball to Bryce?

Ok I am starting to get a little concerned now. That BA is dropping to the low .300s and is plummeting further with every 1 for 4 game. We've had a lot of guys produce so it hasn't been that much of an issue but at some point you have to ask: is Harper always just going to be this insanely streaky player? If he wants half a bil he needs to maintain a .330+ average at the very least with the power and walks.

The need for variety so BH doesn't just hone in on a slower pitch that's breaking

If you want Harper here long term? Don't you want a streaky season to keep his price down. If so we not think his performance will have any affect of his price tag? I believe he will be a great player in the long run.

Yep. Boras gonna Boras. Harper's contract would cripple any chances of competing beyond 2018.

This might sound a little silly but this series against the Cubs is a big one for Harps. Last year the Cub series marked the start of his downfall. Well now he's already slumping, but this time Maddon will pitch to him with how hot the other hitters behind him have been. This is his chance for redemption. I want to see a big series out of Harper. Multiple homers, extra base hits, maybe even steal a base or two. No 0 for 4 3 K games. Lets bury the Cubs.

I think Harper might have a big series for just the reason you mention, although he also might try to do too much and chase stuff.  Never underestimate Maddon's ability to get into an opponent's head and under their skin, he might have another plan of attack to go after Bryce this time.

Maddon is a weird wuss, and is full of himself.

Maddon's ability? What other times has he gotten in to an opponent's head?
