You entrust people whose approach has failed to deliver in the playoffs at the plate since 2012, there's a chance you'll get more of the same. Paging Barry Trotz...

Three players in tonight's lineup were here in 2012

A pathetic offensive performance.  Really really sad on an evening when their starter was as good as he's ever been.

I know someone is going to come out with the lame excuse about the time off (it's only been 4 freaking days!) but that doesn't seem to impact the astros, indians or dodgers. And while we're at it, the cubs took advantage of their opportunities and capitalized.

They just faced a hot goalie.  (Oops, wrong DC team.)

Excuse? You have the same person controlling plate approach with similar results, and that's a non-factor? I didn't bother harping during the year about the ridiculousness of keeping Baker and Schu on if you're serious about contention, just like I didn't harp on the ridiculousness of not canning Barry Trotz after his initial flameout.

Consider the hiring processes and motivations behind each -- as well as their retentions, and you'll see ownership's priorities. It's not a matter of guaranteeing a different result with someone else at the helm, as the players and their performances matter. But when you have people brought in on the cheap that never take the team to the next level and change the culture -- and with both the Nats and Caps, we have epic levels of playoff futility, it's unsurprising that results repeat themselves when you re-up with the same crew.

Maybe they should try deferred payments to get the good hitting coaches to come to DC.

It's time to start talking about worst Offensive Performance - period.  Worst all-time Nationals offensive performance.  I'd rank last night  second.  First would be game 2 NLDS vs. Giants 2014.   These two, because of their importance.

Why is it that hot goalies and pitchers always find their way to DC teams?????

I'm sure Captain Obvious has a sign for that

Seen a man standin' over a dead dog lyin' by the highway in a ditch
He's lookin' down kinda puzzled pokin' that dog with a stick
Got his car door flung open he's standin' out on highway 31
Like if he stood there long enough that dog'd get up and run
Struck me kinda funny seem kinda funny sir to me
Still at the end of every hard day people find some reason to believe
