I did not even see the article in Friday's Washington Post where Wieters and Baker talk about him being way behind learning the staff especially the relievers.  So i guess my take is still way off?

I think the premise that they just suck is just radio hot takeish at best and pretty stupid too.  It is not a metric look. its a deep look at a new catcher who does have a say on what pitches are thrown and the fact he did not catch most of these guys in the spring. A pen giving up 10 homers in 11 games is not "they just suck"
Early on it's been a disaster but it's only been 11 games. Solis, Kelley, Glover, and Treinen were all around last year when we had second best pen in NL. Blanton coming off a big season. I still trust last year's 162 game sample more than the 11 game sample.

It'll improve a bit. And if needed they'll do what they did last season and add at the deadline.

There's something calming about an efficient closer.  If Kelley can hold up, then I'd let him do that for a while. Treinen is too good when he's on not to be useful, but I'd rather have him in middle innings for a while. Fat Albers looks pretty useful, too.  Eventually, you want Glover to close, but give him some time in the majors and success before you try it, perhaps after Kelley breaks down.  Use Blanton as a low leverage multi inning guy for now until he works out his mechanics.

I think we've seen the last of Blake as closer for now. Agree he will be VERY valuable pitching earlier. He just doesn't seem to have the rhythm and swagger/confidence to close.

So I have been following the Tigers for the past 10 or so years. And they have had a terrible bullpen for a good team. Their woes have been well documented. And even at their worst, the didn't blow every opportunity like these guys have so far. It really defies explanation for a bullpen whose guys actually peformed well last season. I mean one guy falling off a cliff I can understand, but everyone simultaneously? There's something else going on here.
Also today, I counted theee extra outs the Nats defense gave the Phillies in just the last two innings. Not many bullpens can pitch around that. All in all, I can't imagine the pen being worse and the Nats are still in first place. I'm not ready to throw in the towel on these guys yet.

you need a proven closer so the rest of the bp can relax

they always have to go cheap in Washington in some area

last year the hitting this year the closer

so frustrating and unprofessional

they had enough money to bring in a quality closer

well slate is smarter than Dusty and Matt. glad we all know  :hysterical:.
I am not saying its all Weiters fault. But the fact he has no time in with any of the bullpen has to be factoring in.  I think the multiple meetings today during his time with Blake shows that. Dusty said he may have caught some of the main guys once or twice if at all during the spring

Paps meltdown as closer lasted about a week last year before they dumped him from closer - they gave up on him pretty quick

He has lots of close calls before that also.

Anyway, they are all professionals--just do their own job.

I think it's just like having all your hitters in an early season slump and they are not really that bad.

Papelbon has proven that he can close. He has a lot of saves. People coast on that long after they are good.

I just don't buy the fact that a guy will perform better in the 7th or 8th because he knows they have a good ninth inning guy. Makes no sense. If guys roles are not clear that may be a different story. They are just not pitching well.

Been very impressive so far. Looks like a Nats major mistake.

I think the post game mentioned Blanton has given up 3.

it burns my hide that when we faced Blanton in the NLDS he was dominant but when he pitches for us he is flaccid.

What exactly was the mistake? Was he ever considering the Nationals? Did they simply low ball him?

It's been 2 weeks.  Let's see how the bullpen is performing at the end of May.

I think it might have something to do with the abnormally warm weather in April. Lot more fly balls are turning into homers. Relievers are still settling in and getting comfortable and they're seeing normal fly ball outs turn into hits and runs. I mean like the graphic posted on twitter that someone posted above, it seems to be a league wide issue, not just for us.
