Brief survey of the Mets fan I know, it's both.

between thor being out for that long, Harvey not looking sharp at all, and matz and lugo being out another month or so, they should be very, VERY worried about their season's prospects.  I wouldn't be surprised if they pull a trade for Quintana to make up for it.
I wouldn't be surprised if they throw in the towel on the season.

The Mets SHOULD be selling but its hard to tell New York fans "we're giving up on this year and looking toward the future." Especially since the Mets were in the World Series just two years ago.

No way ownership let's them sell. And what are they going to sell at this point?

None of their starters are on the table without an overpay
Neil Walker? Jay Bruce? Curtis Granderson?

oh man, that's not good.  I don't remember ever seeing something like that in MLB (grabted, I've only been watching for six seasons or so)

Judging by my time as a Nats fan and how many players ended up with long rehabs after obviously being hurt for a while, let's say both.

The Mets just need to protect their young arms and get them healthy and try and dump what vet position players they can IE Granderson, Walker, Bruce, Reyes...if they can find any interested takers.  Harvey of course needs to pitch to regain his location and secondary pitches.  Be cautious with DeGrom.  Let Thor take his time in his rehab.  Handle Wheeler with baby gloves.  Their entire position player group needs to be overhauled just about.  Conforto is about the only useful building block.  I hope they do, but they are fools to waste all this young and cheaply controlled pitching talent.  Their window to win is these next few years.  Get the arms healthy this year and next year spend bIG to retool the lineup.

http://www.newsday.com/sports/baseball/mets/noah-syndergaard-may-not-return-until-after-all-star-break-1.13575586

Quote

Noah Syndergaard has been instructed not to throw a baseball for six weeks as he heals from the partially torn right lat muscle that forced him from last Sunday’s game in Washington, the Mets ace said Saturday. That prescription suggests he will not be able to return to a big-league mound until after the All-Star Game break

Asdrubal Cabrera has left tonight's Marlins @ Mets game with an apparent arm/wrist injury. No comment from the team yet (game is still in progress). The replay is not good; he seems like he's in a lot of pain. Ironically, this injury happened while Sandy Alderson  had joined the  broadcast team in the booth for an interview and was discussing the various Mets injuries when Cabrera was injured. While I hate to see any player get injured, getting injured while the boss is on tv discussing everyone's injuries  does sound like the most Mets thing ever.

The Mets sold their soul 2 years ago when they pitched their young staff into the ground.   They took a shot and made the World Series so we can debate about whether it was worth it or not.  Would you trade 5-10 years of sustained success (but no playoff wins) for one World Series appearance?  I think I might.

I would trade it for a win. Only desperate fans think a World Series appearance is something awesome.

All this got me to think, "What are the standings?"

Washington    21    9    .700
NY Mets          14   15   .483          6.5
Miami              12   17   .414          8.5
Philadelphia     12   17   .414          8.5
Atlanta            11   17    .393         9.0

Already up 6.5. Every other division the gap is no bigger than like a game or two, except I think maybe the AL West.

We could clinch by Labor Day.  :hysterical:

The Nats are due a cold streak but like last season I don't think anyone in the division has the firepower to make a run at us.

Nats are lucky. They have ability to be patient with injuries, trying out lineups, pitchers, etc. No need to panic after a rough week which even good teams have a few before the season closes. Hopefully that pays off eventually with bullpen.

Oooh, juicy!  Since they won't say, we get to speculate. Missed curfew?  Do they even have that?  Showed up excessively hungover?  Drunk seems unlikely. Or just was being a jerk and got into it with someone internally?

His arm is hurt and they are trying to throw the media off the scent.
