To play devil's advocate for a second, aren't ALL football hits arguably designed to inflict injury?
I don't think so. There's a difference between wanting to make a tackle/separate a player from the ball, and genuinely wanting to hurt someone

Gronk getting one game when his team is 10-2 and a lock for the division is hilarious.

Guy intentionally tried to injure a player with a headshot and gets a slap on the wrist.

Gronk only gets a 1 week suspension.

NJ, I don't believe all hits are designed to inflict injury.

So 1 game?  Yea I'd have thought two for sure.

I think he should have been booted out for 2 weeks so he misses the Pittsburgh game.  I'm glad he's suspended.  At least this is a one off thing and not a repeat offender.

After watching last night's game, NJ has a point about every hit being designed to injure.  Ugly contest.

Right, that's why every DC in the NFL tries to teach his defense to be the lightest-hitting team in the league.

Here's part of an article on Denver's fearsome defense from 2016:

Quote
"A lot of other guys got big hits on him, too," cornerback Chris Harris said. "That wasn't the only hit. Everybody got big hits on him. Like I said, [Andrew] Luck put his body on the line against us. Just like Cam Newton did last week. Quarterbacks know if they want to beat us, they've got to go all-out."

Like Newton, Luck doesn't avoid hits like say, the elusive Russell Wilson.

"No, Andrew Luck doesn't slide too much," Harris said. "Those guys try to run you over. So, you've got to hit them like running backs."

That's what Denver's defense did to Newton last week, hammering him 17 times, including four helmet-to-helmet hits, two of which resulted in fines for linebacker Brandon Marshall and safety Darian Stewart.

It's like watching a knife fight where only light slashes are legal, and then getting outraged over someone getting stabbed. We are all watching a violent sport where people are *trying* to hurt each other on every play. They pull each other's nuts in pileups, for heaven's sake. Yet we act surprised when someone gets hurt more than they are supposed to.

Juju and Iloka both suspended for a game, and this is why the NFL sucks-Iloka and Gronk both for sure went after a player after a play was dead with the intention to hurt them, and deserve a game.  But Juju's hit, although it was hard, from everything I've heard was legal! Him standing over Burfict was a bad look so give him a fine but the same suspension as the other two?  None of the league's punishment ever makes sense and that is why Goodell is such a flippin' joke.

Yep.  Juju's hit was brutal but he used his shoulder.

the NFL is in a bad place with hits  on the one had you have

and on the other

:lmao:

the league needs to keep on expanding to make it's number work for TV and advertisers, but they're in a position where anything they do with hits pisses of a large group of fans, so they half ass it and piss off everyone

I've had it with the number of penalties called in seemingly every game...

I'm down to just watching the redskins and I'm probably done with that now that they're out of it. I used to look really forward to watching two games every Sunday, the past few years, I just don't seem to care as much. Meanwhile, I've started taking my kids to Friday night high school games and have enjoyed that far more than I expected.

I laugh because it's stupid to say that every hit is designed to injure.

According to today's rules the hit was not legal. It was his standing over him that pissed people off. I don't think he should've been suspended for that hit though.

and that is why Goodell is such a flippin' joke.

:hysterical: patriots fans think Goodell has it in for the patriots and most non patriots fans believe the patriots receive favorable treatment.

that's my point, on the one hand, you have fans who want the game to be safe, on the other hand you have people who like football how it is (or how it was a commissioner ago). The league has to appeal to both

Right, it makes sense that lots of non-injured 20-something men have to consume massive amounts of Toradol and opioids to be able to run once a week.

Riiiiight.

Again, there's a difference between hits designed to injur versus hits designed to be hard.

Not sure it matters. This game will likely be gone within 20 years.
