According to Jorge Castillo, the Nats have signed Blanton to a 1-year deal.

Nice depth. Could set up. Be nice to have a closer though. Still, if he can duplicate last season, the Nats pen isn't looking so crappy any more

Just what we need...a sub-1 WAR & 4.35 career ERA past his prime pitcher...

Like Gio wasn't enough for us...

He has gone from being a big food eater to being an innings eater. Better than Cole for long relief.

3.24 ERA as a reliever. 8.91 K/9,   2.49 BB/9

As perspective, Shawn Kelley has a 3.50 ERA as a reliever, with 10.59K/9 and 2.84 BB/9

Kelly isn't the answer either...so you've made my point...

At close, no. For depth, yes. Blanton is a great guy to give the 7th or 8th inning to (assuming that he can pitch like last season). Kelley is the same. So right now, if they both stay healthy and perform like last season, we have our 7th and 8th inning relievers, one of which can pitch multiple innings if needed. Which means that once Rizzo gets his closer, all Dusty has to do is figure out how to manage through the 6th inning.

We just need people who can be reliable, even if they aren't "the answer". You can't go into the season expecting Gott, Glover and Solis to be core guys. If they pan out, wonderful. But we needed to eliminate the possibility it would be a dumpster fire.

Dude's a way better reliever than starter. Plays up in the pen.

Yep. I'd say that Rizzo still needs to identify a closer, but there is at least a framework of pitchers that can can be relied on now.

Kelley's fine when healthy.  The reason he isn't the answer is a health concern.  Blanton is a terrific pickup.  He may even deserve a shot at closing.  I would not be the first to say that.   Bob f'ng Wickman closed.  It just takes cojones.  If Nathan's arm is still attached by 3/31 he could probably do it with Kelley, Blanton, Treinen, and Solis for moments of high leverage.  More seriously, you will probably see bullpen  survivor for closer, with Kelley, Treinen, Glover, and Blanton getting shots. I'm pretty confident one will work work out very well.

Rizzo wins the off-season.

You can never have enough pitching, especially in the pen. Bring 'em on.

We should probably see what Brad Lidge is up to...Rizzo can likely get him on the cheap...

Based on what he did last year (not his Phillies years), this is a good pickup.  He should be an improvement over Petit in long relief, and he can spot start

Blanton's been only or almost only a reliever for 2 years.  Here are the numbers:

7-2, 2.84 in 76 innings (69  hits, 79K, 16 BB); 7-2, 2.48 in 80 innings (55 hits (!), 80 K, 26 BB).

I don't care what you think about Joe Blanton the fatty starter; I thought he sucked.  But 80 innings of 2.48 with a WHIP of barely 1 following on another fairly similar year is worth a contract.

Great depth move but we still need a closer.

Been hoping for this for a long time. Good move. Can't believe 3 million is deferred, that's kind of pathetic.
