Laughing at how some of the same folks that thought the Eaton deal was a mistake are getting a boner over this one...

Does this mean Fangraphs will now approve of the Wieters signing? And if we sign Pagan will their website implode?

You seem like someone who is results-oriented.
Joe Blanton has a 2.29 ERA over his 139 innings as a reliever the last two years.
Dellin Betances: 2.24 ERA over 154 innings in the last two years.

For 5 million dollars, that's a pretty sweet deal, even if he regresses mightily. He threw harder in 2016 than in 2015. I love this. But maybe I'm an idiot because I didn't hate the Eaton deal

The upside with Eaton seems rather disproportionate though...and he didn't cost the Learners any cash other than the salary swaps and Giolito's bonus.  They had to like that...

I don't get the feeling he's gonna be much help to us.  I hope I'm dead wrong, but bringing in a 36 year old journeyman reliever just seems so...meh...

FTFY.

No equating the two pitchers, but to illustrate the difference between SP and RP, in 1987 Oakland signed a 31-year old journeyman SP who had bounced from Cleveland to Boston to the Cubs...

That turned out all right for them.

There's a big difference between being a journeyman SP and being a journeyman RP. Blanton is a productive RP.

The upside on Eaton is highly dependent on being sold on him as a centerfielder and not being sold on the prospects that were traded for him.  Eaton's a good player, but that was a lot to give up.  Blanton's a nice pickup considering the low cost.

I mentioned it earlier. Only 7 wins. Not good enough!

In my opinion, the Eaton deal was only lopsided due to Lopez being in it. Giolito might turn into a great arm, but I have serious doubts that he will be anything more than a solid 4 or 5. The life on his pitches that was supposed to develop never did. He is still young, but I just don't buy into him and I trust how the Nats have found guys and developed them and if they were willing to trade him, my bet is on him being a back of the rotation guy or reliever.

I have warmed up to this deal as the pen is shaky beyond Kelley, Treinen, Solis, and maybe Glover. I think Perez and Romero will likely battle it out in ST and you take the best one north. That leaves a spot for a long man like Worley, Guthrie, or Cole but Cole will likely be sent to AAA and start. Still doesn't make me feel better about not having a closer, but Kelley, Glover, or Treinen could be penciled in. Also I like the addition of Jimmy Cordero just to see if he can light the gun up again, but that is unlikely.

Solid move.  We haven't made any "splash" moves since the Eaton trade, but we've found some bargains by being patient and thus have a deeper roster now.  Getting Drew back for MI depth instead of counting on the young Difo.  Getting Lind as a replacement/upgrade for Clint Robinson.  Getting Wieters as an upgrade over Norris.  Now Blanton to bolster our middle relief/set-up.  Those are 4 roster spots where we are now significantly better.

Been hoping for this for a long time. Good move. Can't believe 3 million is deferred, that's kind of pathetic.
I wonder if I can defer the calories from the mac and cheese and 6 donuts I ate over the past couple of days.

I did have a piece of fruit and a salad, so it is all good.

Kieboom DFAd to make room. It's official now. I hope no one picks up Kieboom. Like him as a backup catcher.

so many catchers on the 40 man . . . Too bad it came to this.  Hoping his brother isn't annoyed by this.

I'd expect they resign Kieboom to a minor league deal.

He wasn't released, just DFA'd. Any team can claim him in the next 10 days and would have to add him to there 40 man roster. I have a feeling that no team will take the chance on him and he will be starting in AAA.

Just what we need...a sub-1 WAR & 4.35 career ERA past his prime pitcher...

Like Gio wasn't enough for us...

He has a career winning record.

Good signing.

Probably signifies Kelley is the opening day closer.

Is there a reason that this guy couldn't be the closer?
