WHO THE freak IS THAT!?!

This is literally the dumbest article ever. So it's a bad move to sign Wieters based on the premise that Norris could bounce back. And if he doesn't?
But there’s just not much evidence that Wieters is clearly better than Norris either. They’re both below average catchers, which is why the Padres gave Norris away and Wieters sat around in free agency until the end of February. If there’s an upgrade here, it’s a marginal one at best, especially because the team will now likely have to dump Norris or Lobaton for not much in return, given that they can’t carry all three catchers on their Opening Day roster.
The Fangraphs article seems to assume that the Nats must pick one starting catcher now, and drop the second-stringer. Why? Neither Weiters nor Norris take up much salary. Why not keep both?
So you have 2 catchers on the bench? Unless you then move Lobaton, who is more valuable as a backup for us than anything he'd get in a trade.
Why not? teams run three catchers all the time. It would only be temporary until Zimmerman and Rendon end up on the DL

Regular cacher, backup, and emergency. Emergency catcher is one whose primary position is not catcher. Teams don't carry three players whose primary position is catcher.
The Cubs kept three catchers on the roster last year. Welington Castillo, David Ross, and Montero/Tim Federowicz
Castillo wasn't with the Cubs last year.
Didn't Castillo play for the Diamondbacks last year?
Maybe they kept him in their hearts.

At least for a game or two. You can shift Turner to CF until you call up Taylor or Goodwin for a long term replacement.I also don't think Norris is going to be as putrid at the plate as he was last year.
What does this have to do with Welington Castillo not playing for the Cubs last year? But seriously, Willson Contreras played a third of his games LF and OPSd .845 last season. If Derek Norris can do that, go ahead and run with three C. They also had a perfect platoon between Montero (300 points higher OPS vs. RHP) and Ross (300 points higher OPS vs. LHP).Whereas Norris, Wieters, and Zimmerman all have the same split - weak against RHP, strong against LHP. So again - why does it make sense to keep a third catcher who can only "play" 1B? You're never planning to platoon Norris for Zimmerman, and if Zimmerman gets injured then Lind is already playing the fat half of the platoon at 1B.
