NBC Universal skips the Giro to do the tour of California.  I think they do fewer of the RCS (owner of the Giro) races than ASO (owner of the TdF).

That is so lame.  The Tour of California is all good and well, but it sure as hell ain't the Giro.  Besides, they are on at totally different times...it's like a frigging 9 or 10 hour time difference!

Nah, I think the big reason is ASO vs. RCS.

Thinking of switching to clipless (love my shimano saints, but having screws dig into shoes burning though my running shoes pretty fast). What the easiest system to pick up? I'm thinking of just keeping it easy and going with spd, but it seems like a lot of people prefer look. Everything online seems more geared to why go clipless and not which system to go with

Spd cleats are a lot easier to walk on, and unless you are Tom Boonen in a pack sprint the difference in performance probably doesn't matter.  I used Look for years starting when they first came out in the 80s, and having now switched to spd, really haven't looked back.  Either way, with any clipless rig you aren't going to space out on loosening the strap at a red light and fall sideways onto the road as everyone has done at some point with toe clips

Plenty of SPD/casual shoes out on the market. Look style shoes are awful unless you're a legit roadie. I actually switched from SPD to flats due to a knee injury and won't be going back to SPDs for a while. If you wear a size 15 US let me know I have shoes collecting dust.

So, I kind of got caught out in the rain yesterday.  I rode up the Mount Vernon trail, across the key bridge, to the Capital Crescent, starting around noon.  By the time I got to the stretch of the crescent trail along the potomac, it started raining.  I figured I'd try to make the tunnel, but by the time I got there, i was soaked so I said, what the heck, keep moving to stay warm.  made it up to Bethesda to refuel and Dunkins, by which time it stopped, so I went back.  Again, it picked up right after I went by the tunnel, so I figured I'd go to the whitehurst freeway and wait it out a bit.  Soaked some more.  I ended up grabbing the metro back from Rosslyn.

This AM, my shoes were still soaked, my gloves were wet, and I go out to my bike and see my light is on even though I had flipped it off.  Turns out, the thing had water in it, which I guess was making the circuit.

Oh congrats to the Giro winner Tom Doumolin - how does a Dutch guy getting such a french name? His win is a bit more remarkable because I don't think Sunweb has the sort of armada of support that Movistar or even Bahrain puts together [/spolier]

Laura Van Gilder won the Crystal Cup criterium this Sunday for Mello Mushroom/Warner Construction. She's local and 52, and she's been winning major women's criteria around the country.  She's been a competitive cyclist since the early 90s.

As for Warner Construction, they say they are a construction consulting company, but I just think it is a front for a cycling organization.  During the "non-competitive" amateur Challenge Ride before the races, their top 6 riders completed 66 circuits of CC (Crystal Drive / 23d St) to Wilson Boulevard in Rosslyn over 3 hours. The riders averaged 25 MPH over that time, maybe higher.

When you ride a lot on city streets you pretty much have to just maintain your line and hope that no one behind you is blasted from the office happy hour or geeking on pcp.

Garmin sent me one. It didn't work that well. Situational awareness is on you.

If my bike accidentally got swapped for another one that was powered, is there a way to discretely recharge the battery on downhills?

Just buy a moped. Any e-bike that's "fast" is going to be way too heavy to actually pedal and any e-assist isn't going to offer enough power to be worth the cost. You can pedal going down hill when you've maxed out the gears but that seems kind of dumb to me.
