I suppose this means Hoskins will play LF. If they add a decent veteran starting pitcher they could be the Nats main competition this year.

I think it's a great move. It's definitely a year where you could accidentally make the playoffs beating up on the non-Nats NL East.

actually, I like all Carlos Santanas.  I think of him as a converted catcher so I just assumed he's not so hot at 1st, but he's been positive on UZR most of the time there (< 5 runs, or < 1/2 win).  I had him on fantasy teams when his average plummeted, but he's still a decent hitter.  $20MM / yr for 3 years seems like a lot given how many successful 1Bs have signed much cheaper and had similar success, but Philly has money to burn.  Maybe he's their Jayson Werth without the down years.  I'm holding out for JD Martinez to the Sox

Ok. My understanding is that he is a butcher at 3b but as you said positive defensively at 1B. On base machine. I would see his HRs going up in CBP. 4th year team option. As you said they have money to burn. Klentak said this was not the year for them to spend. He obviously was trying to set expectations low. I now see them trying to add a veteran pitcher to make a run at a wild card so they can attract Machado. Or Harper.

"The Rays and Giants have agreed to a deal that will send Evan Longoria to San Francisco, per Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times (via Twitter).

Young infielder Christian Arroyo will head to Tampa Bay in return, per Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports (Twitter links). Outfielder Denard Span is going with him, helping to offset some of Longoria’s salary. Young pitchers Stephen Woods and Matt Krook are also joining the Rays, Murray (via Twitter) and Passan (via Twitter) add.

In addition to taking on Span’s salary, Tampa Bay will ship some money to the Giants, Rosenthal tweets. The 32-year-old Longoria is owed another $86MM between now and 2022, including a $5MM buyout on a $13MM option for the 2023 campaign.
