Philly DFAed Mark Appel. I guess he can't be considered a total flop of a pick since Houston got Ken Giles for him, but even so, given that they took him over Bryant, he's got to be in the conversation as the worst decision the otherwise very smart Astros management has made alongside giving up on JD Martinez.

what's worse, drafting Appel? Or passing on Kris Bryant to draft Appel?

The Astros screwed up the #1 overall pick in 2014 too.

Vince Velasquez was the centerpiece of the Giles deal.

Just think, we nailed the number 1 overall pick two years in a row- bet the Astros wish they had our super gm

Phillies wheeling and dealing. Traded Freddy Galvis (free agent after 2018) to the Padres for a pitching prospect. And then signed Carlos Santana for three years. I suppose this means Hoskins will play LF. If they add a decent veteran starting pitcher they could be the Nats main competition this year.

I think it's a great move. It's definitely a year where you could accidentally make the playoffs beating up on the non-Nats NL East.

Fills their quota for very big, very old, 1st basemen who cannot field.  They must miss Ryan Howard more than we thought.

You sound butt hurt the Sox didn't get him.

I don't watch much of the Junior Circuit. I thought the consensus was he was good defensively?

actually, I like all Carlos Santanas.  I think of him as a converted catcher so I just assumed he's not so hot at 1st, but he's been positive on UZR most of the time there (< 5 runs, or < 1/2 win).  I had him on fantasy teams when his average plummeted, but he's still a decent hitter.  $20MM / yr for 3 years seems like a lot given how many successful 1Bs have signed much cheaper and had similar success, but Philly has money to burn.  Maybe he's their Jayson Werth without the down years.  I'm holding out for JD Martinez to the Sox ;)

Ok. My understanding is that he is a butcher at 3b but as you said positive defensively at 1B. On base machine. I would see his HRs going up in CBP. 4th year team option. As you said they have money to burn. Klentak said this was not the year for them to spend. He obviously was trying to set expectations low. I now see them trying to add a veteran pitcher to make a run at a wild card so they can attract Machado. Or Harper.

I think they are serious contenders for Harper.  They may try to dress up the team a bit to attract a major FA next year.  Who knows, it might be Murphy.

That fan base tho. Woof. That’s got to be worth at least a 10% surcharge on the contract.

Don't understand that for the Dodgers. Or is that a net salary decrease so they can sign others?

I could see Harper being the kind of guy who would want to come to DC three times a year and stick it to the Lerners.

Rosenthal says the dodgers will either trade or release Kemp. I can’t imagine Gonzales stays in Atlanta unless they plan to deal freeman.

Update: Gonzales DFAd. Deal puts LA under lux tax cap

SF Giants get Evan Longoria for Christian Arroyo, Denard Span, Matt Krook and Stephen Woods.

Are the Rays going to go full rebuild now? Cause a reunion with the Buffalo would be a big ol upgrade at catcher without the price tag that Realmuto is going to carry.

Evan Longoria to Giants:

"The Rays and Giants have agreed to a deal that will send Evan Longoria to San Francisco, per Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times (via Twitter).

Young infielder Christian Arroyo will head to Tampa Bay in return, per Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports (Twitter links). Outfielder Denard Span is going with him, helping to offset some of Longoria’s salary. Young pitchers Stephen Woods and Matt Krook are also joining the Rays, Murray (via Twitter) and Passan (via Twitter) add.

In addition to taking on Span’s salary, Tampa Bay will ship some money to the Giants, Rosenthal tweets. The 32-year-old Longoria is owed another $86MM between now and 2022, including a $5MM buyout on a $13MM option for the 2023 campaign. Just how much of that will end up on the Giants’ books remains to be learned."
