I'm not excusing doing nothing in free agency.  This team is weaker in some spots too, like starting pitching depth, end of game relief, and catching.  I'm just not seeing anything in the other NL contender signings comparable to what the Yankees did before '09, with Teixeira, Burnett, and a few other moves to make them better than the Rays and Red Sox really fast.

What I meant is I don't see it as an improvement via free agency over last year's team.  I don't see this as a move to improve.  It is a move to maintain.  Melancon, OTOH, is an improvement for the Giants because they had a real weakness at closer last year and they filled it.
Still confused.

You don't see how Dexter Fowler isn't an improvement over Randal Grichuk?

oh, yes.  I might say had we signed Feliz and Holland, it would have been a bigger improvement, but that's an improvement.

Cry me a river. He really has to fight to get good things to happen, like giving Max Scherzer a huge deal, re-signing Strasburg to a big-money contract, giving Jayson Werth a boatload of cash, etc.

The Lerners are fine with the mega contacts because those guys sell tickets, it's the mid level talent, the depth that we are always missing.

Right now we're looking at around the tenth highest payroll which seems fine for DC.

From the article:

Their Opening Day payroll for ’17 currently projects to $153 million, 13th highest in the majors, fifth in the NL, according to Rosterresource.com.

The Nats have spent $69 million less in payroll than the MLB average since the first ten years of the Lerners ownership (2007-16).

they're maintaining a payroll commensurate with market size while being saddled with one of the worst tv contracts in the game.

The MASN contract was factored into the price of the team, they got a bargain.

It was the Lerners who said that they would not profit from the team, I'm just noting that they didn't live up to their word, and calling bullcrap on their cries of poverty over the MASN deal.

yes.  That period also includes 4 years where they would have been idiots if they had spent more (2007- 2010). I'd like to see a graph of 2012-2016.  They'd be in the top 10.

So dumb. Great, we sign Torii Hunter for $15 million a year after the 2007 season to win 62 games instead of 59 games in 2008. Mariners still win 61 and finish with the worst record in baseball, and draft Stephen Strasburg. We draft Dustin Ackley.

Then we double down and sign Teixeira after the 2008 season. Teixeira and Hunter propel us all the way to 67 wins in 2009 so only the 5th worst record! Instead of Bryce Harper (playing in Pittsburgh right now) we draft Drew Pomeranz.

Sure, instead of Strasburg and Harper we have Ackley and Pomeranz this year. But hey, we have all those special memories of Hunter and Teixeira being valuable contributors on those last place Nats teams!

How much are they pulling from the team each year?

Google up Forbes estimates, the Nats were at our near the top in profits for a number of years.
