I'm reading an autobiography of Brian Wilson and so the other day I put on Endless Summer and Spirit of America since I was going to have Beach Boys music stuck in my head all day anyway. Classic stuff I hadn't heard in a while and I enjoyed listening to it, but man, I think I'd forgotten just how inane some of those surf and car songs' lyrics are (neither album contains anything from Pet Sounds or Smile, although I guess the lyrics on the latter are just plain weird and trippy).

I think it was "Little Honda" and "Drive-In" that really struck me the most as stupid ("Don't sneak your buddies in the trunk 'cause they might get caught, at the drive-in/And they'd look kinda stupid getting chased through the lot, around the drive-in ....").

Turnpike Troubadours. I think The Bird Hunters is one of the best constructed songs ever.

Watched Tommy Shaw with the Cleveland Contemporary Youth Orchestra on AXS TV tonight (well, on DVR, it premiered on Sunday).  If you are a fan of Shaw's work in Styx and Damn Yankees, find a recording or find when it next airs.  It was incredible.  The Youth Orchestra is about a 50 person group of teenagers that also includes a chorus.  Highlights were High Enough & Come Again from Damn Yankees, as well as Fooling Yourself, Boat on the River, Crystal Ball, and Man in the Wilderness from Styx.  The show closed with an amazing rendition of Renegade.

A clip of Fooling Yourself is below.

The Youth Orchestra has done a number of concerts with different acts including Styx, Jon Anderson, Melissa Etheridge, and Pat Benatar.

I've been on a Joshua Tree kick this week since we went to the concert Tuesday at FedEx. The last two songs ("Exit" and "Mothers of the Disappeared") have never done much for me, but it sure was interesting to listen to them play it live 30 years later and to hear Bono talk about some of the songs, especially "In God's Country." I still love "One Tree Hill" more than just about any other U2 song.

I put the album on Wednesday night while cleaning up from dinner and when my wife heard "Where the Streets Have No Name," she said, "Didn't they play this song last night?" (Duh!)

As an aside, out of 50,000+ people there, we found ourselves sitting next to someone she knew but had not seen in four years, a lady who grew up in Sarajevo. Made it all the more poignant when the encore opened with "Miss Sarajevo," although the video board showed scenes of Syria during the song.

Dan Snyder can freak off, BTW: Parking was $60 cash. Only positive about that is that it's a good time to break a $100 bill without protest from the person you're paying.

I picked up an original pressing of "The Joshua Tree" during Half Price Book's 40% off last week and it totally took me back to being a kid again.  The second half of that album doesn't get the respect it deserves.

Bono may be a bit of a bloviating ass with a messiah complex, but they were a hell of a live rock band in their prime.  Probably still are (I haven't seen them since '87 though).  The War tour was amazing.

Re Pogues, well, that was a tough act to follow in terms of live shows before Shane got too freaked up to function.
I think I prefer the Pogues.

The War tour was amazing.

I soooo wanted to go to Red Rocks when I was in Colorado this past week and recreate "Sunday Bloody Sunday" but ran out of time

Saw the Don Felder - Styx - REO Speedwagon show at Jiffy Lube tonight (and missed the walk-off, arghhh!)   It was kind of a weird show.  When Felder went on at 7 PM the place was maybe 1/2 full.  He did a set mostly consisting of Eagles classics, including a wonderful rendition of Hotel California in which he was joined by members of the other two bands.  Styx did the middle set and was easily the crowd favorite (Styx and REO are rotating the middle and closing slots each night of the tour.)  Even then, there were still lots of empty seats, maybe 20% of capacity appeared unsold.  By the time REO came on to close the show, half the seats were empty, and people continued to leave throughout their set.  The crowd seemed mostly north of 50, and was very tame.  Rarely did anyone in our section stand, which was kind of weird for me - I mean, it's a rock concert, not a Broadway show.  I didn't like sitting.

Styx was fantastic, tons of energy and they sounded great.  Lawrence Gowan is a much better Dennis DeYoung than Dennis DeYoung at this point.  Shaw and JY seem to be ageless.  REO sounded good except for the lead singer, Cronin is now 66 and doesn't have much power left in his voice.  He got through the ballads, but really struggled for the rocking songs.  My personal highlight was "Back on the Road Again."  The crowd, or what was left of it, seemed to enjoy the rest of the classics.  I was hoping that the show would close with a three-band jam but that didn't happen.

Saw a Zeppelin cover band, Get the Led Out, last night.  They were pretty damn good.  I believe today is Robert Plant's birthday so I had to crank up How the West was Won

so, Friday night at CCSP, there was a battle going on over the music.  Owner had selected a completely unacceptable Sirius station, so a responsible patron decided what was needed was a lot of guitar rock and other fine tunes that were, for the most part, 35 years old or more.

Joe Walsh - Funk #49
Derek and the Dominoes - To Tell the Truth
Little Feat - (studio) Feats Don't Fail Me Now
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Needle and the Spoon
English Beat - Hands Off She's Mine
Ramones - Blitzkrieg Bop

This Bob Segar song grabs me now - mor ethan it did in the 1970'2

The years rolled slowly past
And I found myself alone
Surrounded by strangers I thought were my friends
I found myself further and further from my home, and I
Guess I lost my way
There were oh-so-many roads
I was living to run and running to live
Never worried about paying or even how much I owed
Moving eight miles a minute for months at a time
Breaking all of the rules that would bend
I began to find myself searching
Searching for shelter again and again

Against the wind
A little something against the wind
I found myself seeking shelter against the wind

We have front row seats for Pat Benatar at Charles Town Casino on Friday night.  Mrs. VaRK isn't usually into concerts...daughter #2 is my usual concert companion...but she made an exception for this one.

Not sure if I told this before but had a neighbor two doors down who hated Pat Benatar; used to always try to and make sure it was on while she was in the car.  Didn't help our relationship grow for sure.

Picked up the Jackson Browne Looking East CD a few weeks ago and have this song going through my head continually since then (along with the nursery rhymes).  Easy chords to strum along with.  Like this acoustic version. Barricades of Heaven.
