Good season. Back to back winning seasons. Know what needs to be done and how to move  forward. SM, Bruce Allen, and Dan Snyder just need to figure out the money.

Edit - no comments follow on the final game on 1/1/17, so this is as good a place as any to split off 2017

Is there an alternative to tagging Cousins?  he's a good qb, but he has turned in some dog performances in big games.  With the defensive holes, can you afford $24 MM of cap space for him?

Not unless cousins wants there to be. All this prove it season did was give the redskins less leverage in negotiations

4,917 yards this year. Beat his own team record. Tough position for the team.

But how was his completion & interception rating ?  Also, were the defenses preparing for the pass ?

Excellent. He was the 6th rated QB in the league this year.

Of course. For QBs, like pitchers, only wins count.

Transition tag.

Redskins are in great shape, cap wise. Projected to have 30-40 million in space. Of course Garcon and Jackson are free agents. But still, they're good cap wise.

Transition tag is just a right of first refusal. Pretty likely you get nothing in return if he signs a deal too rich for the skins

Edit, cousins could just sign the offer sheet, get a 20 percent raise and freak the skins

It's a way to gauge the market. I dont think he's getting much more than 20 million a year.

He can just sign the offer sheet, get a 20 percent raise and play out the year of he doesn't like the market

Transition tag will be less than the franchise tag. I'm not seeing an issue.

Not by much, transition guarantees a 20% raise, so $23 million vs $24 million.

Sign Garcon and Thompson, pay Cousins for a long term deal. There's nobody available likely to be as good. Get better players for the defense. Ask McVay and Gruden why they don't have a steady running game.

Baker is a bigger priority than anyone not named Cousins and assuming we re-sign one of the two FA receivers. Our defense is trash with him and he's not amazing, but we're even worse without him.

Kirk Cousins’ starting record: 19-21-1

Cousins’ record against teams with 9+ wins: 2-11

For two seasons in a row, Cousins puts up gaudy numbers, but he's utterly pedestrian in a telling stat: TD%.

Beyond simple QB W/L record, TD% is something under more direct control of the quarterback, and this stat is a weak point for Kirk.  It's indicative that he just doesn't have the nerve of an elite QB.  Today was yet another example of that.  He's a good passer, but will he ever have that breakout moment like Brees/Rodgers/Eli?  His performance when it counts suggests it's rather unlikely.  He might be the Drew Storen of the Redskins.

You should include Callahan in that conversation

Baker is going to be 30. I see no reason to invest in him heavily.

Yesterday was not a good game from Kirk (the INT to end the game was bad bad bad), but here's a couple of things an admitted Cousins apologist would point out:

We ran the ball 15 times for 38 yards yesterday.
The first INT was all on the receiver.
WTF was Gruden doing with the clock at the end of the first half?

Let's also look at our first four first and ten plays:

1st and 10 at WSH 25

(15:00 - 1st) (Shotgun) R.Kelley left tackle to WAS 26 for 1 yard (D.Harrison, L.Collins).

1st and 10 at WSH 14

(11:10 - 1st) T.Nsekhe reported in as eligible. K.Cousins sacked at WAS 4 for -10 yards (D.Harrison).

1st and 10 at WSH 25

(2:12 - 1st) T.Nsekhe reported in as eligible. R.Kelley right end to WAS 23 for -2 yards (L.Collins).

1st and 10 at WSH 46

(1:30 - 1st) (No Huddle) C.Thompson up the middle to WAS 47 for 1 yard (L.Collins; J.Bromley).

Sorry man, but Cousins missed open guys all day and with the playoffs on the line, he choked. Quarterback is this team's highest priority this off-season. Everything in free agency should give you the flexibility to get a QB in the draft. Someone offers you a first rounder for Kirk, you take that crap and run.

On the plus side, drafting a qb gives them an excuse to suck for another two years while the qb learns the system; that frees up a lot of my fall Sunday afternoons
