Nationals hitting coach Mitchell Page takes leave of absence, Lenny Harris named interim hitting coach
05/11/2007 4:02 PM ET
MLB.com

The Washington Nationals today granted hitting coach Mitchell Page a leave of absence for undisclosed personal reasons and named Lenny Harris interim hitting coach. Nationals Vice President and General Manager Jim Bowden made the announcement.

Harris, 42, joins Manny Acta's staff on an interim basis after beginning the season as the Nationals infield coordinator at the minor-league level. Harris joined the Nationals organization as infield coordinator on August 9, 2006.

Originally Cincinnati's fifth-round selection in the 1983 Draft, Harris hit .269 with 161 doubles, 21 triples, 37 home runs, 369 RBI and 131 stolen bases in 1,903 big league games spanning 18 seasons with Cincinnati, Los Angeles (NL), New York (NL), Colorado, Arizona, Milwaukee, Chicago (NL) and Florida. Perhaps best known as baseball's all-time leader in pinch hits (212), Harris was a part of four postseasons, including the Marlins 2003 World Championship club. He will wear uniform No. 9.

It's issue following issue with our organization. We may as well get it all, hopefully, out of the way this year while we're bad anyway.

What if all of a sudden our bats come to life!

It appears this is some medical condition he is dealing with. Hopefully, he'll be ok. He has been good working with these guys the last couple of years. I'm sure this year has been frustrating for him, although his approach was to wait for at least 50 at bats before making adjustments, so that process hasn't been going on for long this season.

....Harris... will wear uniform No. 9.

Wasn't that HOFer Ted Williams' number, the manager of the Senators?

Mitchell Page is part of Bowden's AA 2nd Chance folks, along with Dmitri Young.  This team's hitting only improved in 2006 because of the addition of Soriano.  It has been so bad at this point in 2007 that I was about to post something about changing the hitting coach - because he has been ineffective.  The 1962 Mets and that bad Tigers team look like world class hitter compared to us this year.

I had the same thought. Whatever it is, I hope that he's able to beat it.

Yes, it looks like it's some sort of medical problem. Hope he can beat it -- the symptoms don't sound good.

Page takes leave of absence
05/11/2007 6:48 PM ET
By Bill Ladson / MLB.com

WASHINGTON -- The Nationals granted hitting coach Mitchell Page a leave of absence for personal reasons and named Lenny Harris the interim hitting coach on Friday afternoon.

When reached by phone, Page said that he is leaving for medical reasons and is going home to Melbourne, Fla., to see Dr. Bruce Thomas, the team's former physician, on Monday. Page is a regular patient of Thomas.

Sources confirmed that Page has an appointment with Thomas.

Page was adamant that his problems were not alcohol-related. Page left the Cardinals after the 2004 season because of substance abuse. He said that he is losing feeling on the left side of his body. According to Page, he is having problems holding on to a cup of coffee and walking to the batting cage.

"Drinking has nothing to do with it. I'm not going to rehab," Page said. "I have to do this. I lost control of my body. Just holding on to a cup of coffee -- I'm dropping them."

Page said that he talked to general manager Jim Bowden and team president Stan Kasten on Friday afternoon about his problem.

Page did not want to talk about his future with the Nationals, but sources said that he most likely will not be back with the Major League club.

Page is considered a respected hitting coach and is credited for tutoring Albert Pujols, Scott Rolen and Ryan Zimmerman. He was in his third season with the Nationals -- two as a hitting coach and one as a hitting coordinator. Washington currently ranks 29th among 30 Major League teams in offense with a .227 batting average.

"The leave of absence has absolutely nothing to do with the team's hitting, has nothing to do with his performances as a hitting coach," Bowden said. "We consider Mitchell one of the best hitting coaches in baseball. The personal issue is going to be kept private, and we're going to all respect his privacy. We're going to support him in every way possible."

As for Harris, he is widely respected in the Major League Baseball community. There are people who believe he will make a great manager someday, but Harris told MLB.com during Spring Training that he prefers a coaching job.

"That was people putting into my head about being a manager," Harris said at the time. "I would never want to be a manager. I like coaching. I like helping out the kids. I would like to have a first-base coaching job or a bench-coaching job. I'm a motivator type of guy. I don't feel like managing is for me. A lot of people tell me that I would be great at it, but I know my role. I just know I can get guys ready to play and motivate them a little bit."

Harris, 42, joins manager Manny Acta's staff on an interim basis after beginning the season as the Nationals' infield coordinator at the Minor League level.

Originally Cincinnati's fifth-round selection in the 1983 First-Year Player Draft, Harris hit .269 with 37 home runs, 369 RBIs and 131 stolen bases in 1,903 big-league games. Perhaps best known as baseball's all-time leader in pinch-hits (212), Harris was a part of four postseasons, including the Marlins' 2003 World Series championship club.

"Lenny's been in several postseason locker rooms," Bowden said. "He's a winner, he's a leader. Both Manny Acta and I have known him for many years. Both respect what he brings to the table and think he'll do a tremendous job on an interim basis here."

The Cardinals DO speak highly of him, but who really knows?  I think Pujols and even Nick Johnson didn't need any hitting coach at all.  I think Ryan Church's improvement in 2007 is primarily due to Ryan Church, and his off season efforts with a vision specialist.   And his totally hot wife.

Mitchell Paige's medical problems sound serious, and NOT alcohol-related.  It almost sounds like a mild stroke or some kind of degenerative disease.  Get well Mitchell; this is just a game.

Not to mention Frank Howard. (Most recall Howard wearing 33, but he wore 9 longer .... gave it up for Williams, but for only three years.)

And not to mention Vinny Castilla as well ....

That's Senators2005's territory.  I don't know how he got screencaps of iluvryanzimmerman (who apparently got LECTURED TO DEATH off this board) from TV games, but Ryan Church's mom and scorching-hot wifey were repeatedly shown on TV last night, when he batted.  They were NOT behind the dugout.  They were taking photos of him.

Check out this set of highlights from the 3-run 6th inning. The second hit is Church's double to score Guzman. After that, they cut to Church's family in the stands.

I see the MLB screen and hear all the audio, but there is NO video to see.  Black screen.  She must be so HOT that she burns off the visual.

Please tell me that Tina Church has a single sister.

I think I read his mom's lips to say "Take that, Dave B, et al".  I'm pretty sure of the "et al" part.

Dave, there ARE a few guys who post on the one or the other of the forums, with whom Ryan is not too happy about.  You will be gratified to learn you are not in the top 3, for what that is worth.
