Closer Watch: 2017

I figured I'd start a separate thread since this is arguably the team's biggest need right now.

Melancon
Chapman
Jansen

What's Plan D?

Kelley

Until we see 6 blown saves by early June and then rizzo desperately tries to find one and gives up more than just $$

"We looked into some things because you always have to see what it would take to add a talented player but have remained comfortable with Kelley in the 9th throughout the process of trying to add pieces to the bullpen"

Rizzo likes the team he has constructed...

Epic Fail...

Ouch. Hope there's enough left to deal for a closer. Otherwise, it's a lot of meh. Can't see Kelley, Koda, Solis, Ollie or Gott closing a playoff game.

Rizzo is going to have to move Robles and Fedde in order to fix the bullpen.

What about waiting till the trade deadline and picking one up like they did with Melancon?

I think this is the most likely scenario although I won't be surprised to see either Ziegler or Holland get a chance in the start of the season. Those both would likely be affordable options who could move to a setup or general bullpen role without too much drama.

Available Free Agents: Papelbon and Storen :couch:

Slightly more serious, Greg Holland is out there and reportedly recovered/recovering from Tommy John and is expecting to be ready for opening day. Holland, a Boras client, is looking for 2 years in the $20M range.

Somehow, I feel like Holland being a Boras client is just destined to happen.

I can't see the Nats going back to the White Sox for Robertson.

They're working on it now.

Fedde and Robles for Colome?

I don't do that deal. Colome doesn't have the track record. I don't feel comfortable with the farm system anymore to make another deal.

Farm system is pointless now. We're all in. We sold it for Eaton. Rizzo has to fix the pen. There is no choice. If he's not willing to do this, then he may as well put Harper, Turner, Eaton, and Rendon up on the block.

Maybe try Koda Glover? He's got great stuff and the temperament, kinda has the whole Rick Vaughn vibe to him, but he isn't exactly seasoned.

Still, every Closer is inexperienced at some point. Even Mo Rivera at one point was closing his first ever playoff game.

I kind of agree with this.  Robles seems safe, but everybody else is fair game!

Robles is our best trade chip. Offer him to the Yankees for Betances

Well aren't you just a bundle of joy??

Good lord man. Why do you even cheer for this team if it is so painful for you? The season hasn't even begun and youbare writing it off....classic stuff.

You're looking at 2016 SSS #1 Right here. Right until the season ended and it became painfully obvious what this team needed to get to the next level. Rizzo has literally done everything but that.
