NCAA Hockey 2016-17 - Order Restored
« Topic Start: November 15, 2016, 09:45:57 AM »
After several years of 1st time D1 champions, mostly from smaller schools (Yale, Union, Providence), order was restored last year when North Dakota Whatevers defeated Quinnipiac for the men's title.

This year, through mid-November, it looks like another run of traditional powers, with a top 4 in USCHO of Denver, Duluth, BC, and Quinnipiac.  I guess it is time to acknowledge QU as a consistent, if recent, add to the major powers.  The next 4 also has a familiar ring, with BU, Lowell, NoDak, and Minnesota, followed by Notre Dame and Penn State.  Only the last one sounds like a "huh?"  Harvard's loss to QU dropped them to #11.

I went to the Cornell at Yale game Saturday, a 6-3 Cornell victory.  Yale took the play to Cornell for long stretches, especially with a lot of penalties, but some strong goal tending never let Yale get closer than 4-3.  Biggest disappointment so far this season for Yale has to be the drop off in defense and goal tending.  Spano had had some very good results over the past 3 years as Alex Lyons's back up, but in two conference weekends, he's given up 18 goals.  Allain pulled him after 5 goals on 21 shots over the first two periods, but Yale could not get the offense going again in the 3d.  My guess is that Yale will look to try a sophomore or freshman in goal next, thinking longer term.  It probably doesn't help that the defense is mostly sophomores and freshmen, too.

Clarkson played a killer out-ot-conference schedule:

Vermont twice, Merrimack, UMLowell, UNH, Providence, Wisconsin and Minnesota.  Came out of it 3-4-1.

Should translate into a good in-conference schedule going against some big powerhouses early on.

nice win over Union.  I think Clarkson is still outside the top 20 on USCHO but got votes.

Yeah well a 6-5-1 record will do that.  Clarkson also isn't the traditional power it used to be.

So, Friday was a tough day to be a top 10 team, as ##1 (DU), 2 (Harvard), 3 (Duluth), 7 (NoDak), and 8 (BC) lost.  Saturday was more restore the order, as only Harvard and BC doubled down and Ohio State (#10) tied.  (#4) Penn State and BU (#5) figure to benefit from Harvard's problem.  BU's wins were over BC, and Harvard's losses were at RPI/Union.  Ranked teams losing to unranked include losses by Vermont (#12) at Providence, Notre Dame (#13) at Merrimack, and Mankato (#18) hosting Bowling Green.  #19 Cornell topped #15 QU @ Hamden, and there were a few ties. Omaha took care of colorado college on the road, and Yale grabbed 3 points in New Haven v. Clarkson and #16 St. Lawrence.

It's looking like the first very strong year for the B1G since they started playing hockey as a conference.  Penn State moved to #1, and Minnesota is well within the top tier at #7 in the USHCO poll and #8 in pairwise.  Harvard tumbles to #6 (#10), while Cornell is up to #15 / #11,and union is #9 / #6.  Denver, Duluth, BU, and Lowell round out the top 5 in both.

#3 Harvard beats #4 BU 6-3 to win its first Beanpot since 1993.  They dominated almost the entire game except for about a 5 minute stretch in the 2d when BU got its first 2 goals.  Madsen is streaky and not very good, but if he gets hot, Harvard could be very dangerous in the NCAAs.  wins over Union (then #5) and BU the past week ought to start getting them some 1st place votes and maybe move them by Denver to #2.

Do they give a pot of beans to the winner? If so, the bus trip back to campus could be interesting.

They just get to carry the beanpot back to campus on the T.  They don't even get Charlie Cards to board, so it is kind of a loss.  Harvard has an advanced lab working on better uses of methane, so they are really excited to have a new source.

Yes.  I once worked on a global warming study in the 90s--the beano for cows project I believe it was called.

actually, it was the burps more than the farts that were the problem.  They were looking at changing the feed for ruminants to see if they would burp less.

Clarkson tops Cornell 6-2 in ECAC quarters.  Best of 3.  Cornell drops to #13 pairwise, so not advancing might drop them out of the NCAAs.  Union, Harvard, and St. Lawrence all win.
