Rule 5 Draft (2016-17)
« Topic Start: November 14, 2016, 08:56:28 AM »
Teams have until Friday, 11/18, to protect Rule 5 eligible players by adding them to the 40-man roster.  Anyone know who's at risk from the Nats?

I think they have 9 slots on the 40 man, so I doubt anyone with any potential is at risk at this point.

Frankly, I'll be curious if they try to grab an arm for the bullpen or a CF.  You have a shot at carrying a 5th OF or a middle reliever all year, so, with that many slots, you figure they may try to hit on someone.

A CF would surprise me.  They already have enough toolsy outfielders who can't hit, which is the typical CF you find there.  There's not really a reason to try to carry another den Dekker/Goodwin/Taylor on the 25-man all season when those 3 guys already exist (and den Dekker is even a free agent).  But I know jack squat about anything in reality, so who really knows?

for the heck of it, I'd almost prefer to see them grab a short, somewhat dumpy looking on base machine just to give themselves a different look.  But I'm not really blinded by what we have in the system, so if it is just a dice roll, I don't see the harm of seeing whether we can hit on someone.

I'd be happy to take that guy, almost regardless of where he plays.  When you have crap for production at 1B and dwindling production in LF, you can always find a way to move the pieces to get the short, dumpy guy in the lineup if he can actually hit.  Frank Catalanotto made a nice career of being short, dumpy, and hitting.

Top Nats prospects at risk (number represents rank among top 50 unprotected prospects):

9. Austin Voth, RHP
17. Rafael Bautista, OF
19. Osvaldo Abreu, SS/2B
28. Raudy Read, C

I think Voth, and Bautista get 40 man slots, Abreu is too far away.

Not many people know this, but Frank Catalanotto is actually Italian for Brian Roberts.

some additional available names: Jake Johansen, Bryan Harper, Matt Skole.

I wonder if Harper gets a 40 man slot.  He seems to be on the cusp of getting to the majors.  Voth is probably a lock for the 40-man.

Sounds like Bryan "Mustache" Harper had Tommy John surgery recently.

Team doesn't have to announce minor league injuries/surgeries.

do people think Skole is capable of backing up both infield corners or just 1B?

FanGraphs has KATOH's recommendations for Rule 5 picks. No Nationals are on any of the lists.

http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/katohs-guide-to-the-2016-rule-5-draft/

There are some really interesting targets there, like Kylo Ren Kyle Wren, an OF who can play all three spots with solid contact hitting, or 6' 6" lefty Angel Perdomo, who posted a 29% K rate and might make a fun bonus LHP.

Perdomo looks like a good option.  6'6" lefty who hits 94 as a starter?  Sign me up
