I didn't realize how much of a terrible baseball city Cleveland was, 28th in attendance this year with a good team
Total attendance and average attendance per game is a bit of a misleading statistic. It's important to take in to account the stadium capacity. Take the Dodgers. They had the highest average with 45k fans per game. But Dodger stadium has a capacity of 56k. So that means that, on average they filled it up about 80%. On other hand the Red Sox averaged 36,486 fans per game. By that number, Boston would be less a baseball city than LA. But Fenway Park only has a capacity of 37,949, which means, that, on average, the stadium was 96% filled every home game.
Now, Cleveland doesn't exactly fill it up (73%), but I don't think of it as a bad baseball town. I think there are other factors, such as economic conditions that play in to it, but at the end of the day, I don't think of them as one of the five worst baseball cities in America.
