Amazing.     Dylan once said the greatest love poet of his time was Smokey Robinson.

I guess that beats out Kevin McHale's NBA Exec of the Year Award as the biggest prize going to a Hibbing native in the past quarter century.

He damn near invented meaningful lyrics.

Though the committee must have struggled with his having invented the "rap".

Lots of blues musicians probably would disagree with that

Does one get ostracized if they say they aren't a Dylan fan? I respect who and what he is, but have never been drawn to his work.

I'm the same way.  Iconic American master whose work--however significant--does not move me on an artistic level.  Kind of how I view Mark Twain.  Just don't say anything bad about Iggy Pop  :P

Also jumping on board here. Bob Dylan kinda makes me shrug, but I haven't listened to nearly as much of it as a lot of other WNFFers. But Mark Twain is awesome and don't you say otherwise!

I was never into Dylan but my brothers used to listen and he is great. And an American music icon. Paved the way for so many after him including Springsteen.

Well, one thing is for sure - the Nobel committee caught everyone by surprise.  This ain't no Doris Lessing or VS Naipaul

I hope this opens the door for Lil Wayne to eventually win the award.

His catalog is so big that it is impossible for me not to find things that I like.  I don't own any of his albums and don't think I ever did, but there are probably about 15 - 20 that I really enjoy whenever they come up on a playlist.  Also, I think the literature prize recognizes that it was his writing and not necessarily his performance that is exceptional.  Funny, I like Mark Knopfler's voice, and the saying about him was "plays like Clapton, sings like Dylan."

Knopfler's voice is miles better than Dylan to me.

Dylan had been out for several years when I was bowled over by "Positively 4th ST" and "Like a Rolling Stone".     After that, I was hooked.   Went back and discovered many of his early hits had been covered by Peter, Paul and Mary, etc.    I think Dylan opened me up to folk music.     Before him, it was R & R, R & B, jazz, blues, etc.       Then, The Byrds did "Mr. Tambourine Man".    Hendrix did "All Along the Watchtower".   Cher did "All I Really Want to Do".    Patti LaBelle did "Most Likely You Go Your Way and I'll Go Mine".

I'm not much of a Nobel Literature guy but Dylan told stories.     His greatest accomplishment may have been turning the Beatles on to reefer.

Agreed.

Like some others here, I've never really gotten into Dylan, and that's because of his voice.  Can still really appreciate his lyrics, though.
