His life wasn't wasted. He had tremendous impact on many people and his community. Gone too soon, but not wasted.

My point was that at 24, surely some of his best years will never be known.  His accomplishments at his age were indeed tremendous.

He was supposed to start today, but they pushed him back to Monday. I know it's a whole lot of "Shoulda, coulda, woulda" but what are the chances he wouldn't have been out on that boat this morning if they kept him starting today?  :( Crappy all the way around.

I thought the same thing. I know lots of people will feel bad about the decision although it's not to blame.

One of my favourites:

I was mad when it happened but then I couldn't help but laugh.

I think he was one of those universally loved pitchers. Like Félix.

He was 24- it could be someone as disliked as Hamels used to be, and I think the sentiment would be the same.

Yoanis Cespedes with a nice tribute, hung a Mets jersey in the dugout today with Fernandez name/number.

Breaks your heart, the guy was so damn good and usually to our detriment but it's so sad

This is a good example for the Nats later this week

Gio and Turner seemed to know him best, maybe they do something.

Devastated this morning when I read the news. Still shocked now. He really was fun to watch play the game of baseball, and he actually played to make it fun. RIP to his family, friends, the Marlins, and all of baseball for losing someone so influential and talented.

I was on the fence between going to the Nats game, going to the Caps pre-season game, or watching the political crapshow tomorrow.  Definitely going to the ballgame now.

I was on a flight to Omaha this morning so I didn't hear about this until about 10:30 eastern time. As soon as I turned my phone on, I saw a text from my friend with the news. I was absolutely stunned. This is awful as he was a big part of the future of baseball, not only in Miami but for the game as a whole. What a talent and it's a shame we'll never see him pitch again.

Marlins will all wear #16 tonight, they've also painted a large #16 on the grass behind the mound.

I saw the 16 on the mound.    Yesterday, some of the players took a moment there.    Moving.     May go to the game Friday to see what the Nats do.

Looks like they'll be retiring the number 16 as well.

I hope they do, but:

"Marlins president David Samsom said it's too soon to think about retiring Jose Fernandez's jersey with the organization. He said that's a consideration for down the road, but there are plenty of other things to think about right now." http://www.espn.com/espn/now?nowId=21-0572159303603984500-4

Now this was cool: Dee Gordon led off by batting righty and imitating Fernandez's stance at the plate. After the first pitch, he switched back to batting left-handed and hit his first homer of the season, crying as he rounded the bases. Unbelievable.

I think that reads as either we haven't decided, or were morning and we'll hold off on the ceremony until everyone is in a better place- I hope it's the later

I think it's a great tribute but do the rules allow the batter to change sides during an at bat?

Technically not anymore.
