I think Nats still have the pitching to win some games. Scherzer and Roark are a good one two punch and the back of the bullpen is really solid.

Problem is the margin of error is now miniscule. The offense can't disappear for a couple games and Gonzalez plus the fourth starter can't completely crap the bed.

If it's not too late I'd like to change my vote for "heat death of the universe".

Yes!! Taylor Tyler Cole has improved to the point where he only has one bad inning each start. If the Nats can just predict in which inning Cole will give up four runs, they'll be fine.

What are Scherzer's career #s in playoff games where he pitches on short rest? I know he's done it before in Detroit but can't remember the level of success.

So it worked badly year one, he shoved year two with 8-10 days rest, and then it worked out the next time he did the short rest/sometimes relief thing.

Let Sammy Solis take 2 or 3 innings, let each of the lefty guys in the pen have a go, the Dodgers are really that bad against lefties, and our Pen lefties are pretty damn good. Just run a bullpen game. Heck, let Clint pitch an inning if you need. He can probably get out a couple of Dodgers.

Is there really any debate?  I feel like it's at least 98% certain (probably more) that Ross is the game 4 starter, with Gio in game 3 and Max/Tanner in 1 and 2 (although I prefer Tanner in 1 and Max in 2 and 5, which won't happen).  If Joe goes short in game 4, there are plenty of options to carry us through the rest of the game, though Lopez will be the designated long man to get 3 or 4 innings if necessary.  I'd rather have Tanner go game 1 so that he could be available in game 4 as well, and Max will pitch game 5 (if there is one) regardless of whether he starts game 1 or 2.

We should go Max game 4 and Tanner in Game 5. Neither had a heavy workload in Games 1&2

I thought Max went around 90 pitches in game 1.

you don't f' around with his normal cycle when you designed your roster around Ross with Lopez / Solis behind him.  Only if you burn Lopez Monday and you lose do you even think of that sort of gimmick.

Why on earth do we freak around with Ross and Lopez when we have a 20 game winner to call upon, and Tanner Roark behind him?

Do you really want a Game 5 to come down to Kershaw?

Game 4 is only 3 days' rest for Max. Maybe you bring Roark out of the pen too, but Game 4 might be a crapshow of guys going 2 innings each. Of course, the Dodgers are throwing their weak link in Julio Urias...

If Max throws Game 5, he'll be missing the first 2-3 of the NLDS.

Urias isn't a weak link. Remember, that guy has seen this team twice and done well against them both times.

3 days = throw day.

If he throws game 5, we might get to the NLCS. If he doesn't...?

Because we're up 2-1 and have a fresher pen(relative to the Dodgers)I think you throw out the Ross/Lopez tag team and hope to win a wild one with tons of pitching changes.
