Men are up in 4 X 100.

I can't decide on the better athlete in the whole Phelps vs. Bolt thing.

Phelps is insane but gets so many more events to swim. A sprinter gets a couple of events.

Bolt could run middle distance races if he was good enough at it. But I guess there's no running analog to different strokes.

Why not just appreciate them both?

Heck of a play by Turner, but I thought he was safe. Damn, FP just said the same thing.

Don't get me wrong, I do, BIG TIME. The question always seems to come up though.

Don't go by medal count. Go by how many athletes actually pose a threat to them. There are very few who challenge Bolt because countries don't produce many great sprinters. Phelps has had to fend off competition from many countries including his own. Swimming also requires more overall power.

Running is strange.  Almost all good distance runners right now are from or are descended from people from East Africa, and likewise for sprinters and the Caribbean.

But they aren't elite. A lot of countries produce elite swimmers.

IMHO, not as many.   Not many pools in most of Africa, Asia, South America, Caribbean, etc.    Chances of a runner coming out of Zimbabwe is higher than a swimmer.     Swimming is a first world sport.     Elite means they have time to swim all day.

That doesn't matter. What matters is the reality that Phelps has had to contend with many more elite swimmers from many countries than Bolt has has to contend with in the two sprints he specializes in.
