Famous Persons Nicknames
« Topic Start: August 10, 2016, 08:30:31 PM »
We started the Trea Turner nickname thread, so I thought this might be fun.

My wife asked if Prince Fielder was retiring, and I told her he was.  I also told her he was retiring with the exact same number of MLB home runs as his father, Cecil.

Thinking of Cecil, I thought of the Detroit Tigers.  I then remembered Gates Brown, a Tiger that I met back in the day, who was on the 1968 Tigers WS Championship team we mentioned earlier today.

Does anyone know why he got the nickname "Gates?"

Post if you know, and post you own person of interest...doesn't have to be an athlete...

"Born in Crestline, Ohio, as William James Brown, he was given the nickname of “Gates” at an early age by his mother. He never knew why she called him that, he just knew that it fit. "

He was also called the Gator.  The bio is fascinating, seems he was quite the character.   I assume she called him "The Gator" because "The Godfather of Soul" was already taken.

Easy.  He says that when he was a teenager, his peers used to refer to beer as "oil."

Mark "The Bird" Fidrych. Because he looked like Big Bird from Sesame Street.
