MELANÇON

I hope that they get his jersey correct and put  the little squiggle on the cedilla.

Player most similar to Mark Melançon? The Chief, Chad Cordero. Anyone else take that as a good sign?

I don't think they have flights from Pittsburgh to California.   He'd have to take the Greyhound to either Cleveland or Akron/Canton for a flight.  ;)
There are flights from Pittsburgh to California but none from Milwaukee (where the Pirates currently are). There is a train, goes through Atlanta.

it is a karmic closing of the circle.  The world is complete.  The Era of Good Feelings returns.  Monroe for the next racing President.

Rizzo HAD to do SOMETHING. His pen was falling apart and the rest of the team would follow soon. I don't know if this guy is the answer but give Rizzo credit for not sitting still. I hope he's not done.

This guy is one of the best Closers in baseball. Look at his stats. All Star Quality Reliever!

3×All-Star (2013, 2015, 2016)
NL Reliever of the Year (2015)
NL saves leader (2015)

1.51 ERA 30 Saves THIS YEAR!

Sure he's a rental but 1 prospect and NOT a top prospect and 1 reliever with potential who is doing ok given the market for pitching especially Closers means this trade is a STEAL for the NATs. Remember teams also knew the Nats were desperate after the last few nights. Absolute steal!!!

They still have prospects to get more hitting and even more relief or even a 5th starter upgrade if they want. This team is loaded with top prospects. Rizzo did it again he is one of the best GMs in baseball.  They need to address their hitting they need at least 1 more big bat I hope he does something but they really were desperate for a Closer.

PS There will be a lot of quality closers in FA this upcoming year so a rental is perfect in the sense they still might get a Chapman type in the offseason (3rd time lucky).

PPS Cubs hurt themselves by giving up way way too much for Chapman's rental which is another positive for the Nationals since they compete with the Cubs in the NL.

I rate this trade 11 out of 10!!!!

If that's all Rizzo gave up, he's a wizard.

Given the market, no doubt.

A rental though.

I'm not in love with this, isn't Melancon only good as a Pirate?  I know he sucked for the Sox and then he goes back to Pittsburgh and is all awesome again, don't know that I trust him.   Also, I still believe in Felipe, I think we shall regret not having him at some point but whatever, hopefully Melancon helps us this year.
He was good with Houston as well before getting traded to Boston.

Yep. He was a highly-regarded Yankees prospect, and asserted himself as the closer not very long after the Stros got him.

Here's a brief webcam interview.

He loves pissin' on the Nats' parade.

Rosenthal is a moron. I bet he applauded Rizzo giving up a king's ransom for Chapman. Moron.

Is it just me but why does the national media love to rank on the Nats?

I'm with you there. I want that a-hole off the team. He serves no purpose whatsoever.

This was an excellent trade.  We certainly needed a replacement for Papelbum.  I'll be glad when he's no longer on the team.

The Cubs didn't set the market. They saw a shiny toy and like a fan boy when the new iPhone comes out went "OMGOMGOMG take all my monies!" That's their prerogative, but that doesn't mean that's what everyone else is going to have to pay.

I think Theo is awesome but that was an absurd trade and he got fleeced.

I think we have to keep the strangler, if he's willing to pitch in the 7th or 8th he could be valuable
