Yep. Unfortunately this is the hand dealt to late bloomers. Clint could hit 30 homers next year and still not get an extension.

As much trouble as Roark had last year, what made the move look particularly bad was the decline of Fister. Had Fister pitched like 2014 and like his time in Detroit, no one would have noticed Roark's problems.

Had Fister pitched like 2014 last season I think we end up winning so many games early that we just power through the division and never collapse. His losses were deflating and it played a part in keeping us from really building up a lead before the Mets disaster series occurred.

Fister's struggles are what opened the door to Roark coming back to the rotation at the end of the year.

I only found 9, but they went 7-2 in those games. One was when he gave up 3 runs in the 8th to the Dodgers. The other the pen gave it up.

We have 3 more years of control (arb 1, 2, 3), which will take him through his age 32 season. Hits the FA market at 33. I'd go year to year with him and, if he is still good at 32, offer him a qualifying offer. Hardball, but no need to lock him up longer and guarantee years when his velocity should slow.
