Nice to see how well Dusty manages the bullpen.

You do get the feeling that someone is actually thinking about late game situations and making moves quickly. Whether they'll work out as well as they have so far, I'm not sure. But it's a nice and welcome change from McCatty/Johnson/Williams.

I don't think the bullpen is actually any better, but it's better-used.

Guys... we're only 6 games into the season.... Let's hold thoughts on bullpen usage for a bit (at least until an actual stretch where 8+ straight days with a game).

5 saves in 7 games.

On pace for 115.

He wants to catch Mariano.  All he needs is 101 saves/year for 3 years counting the 5 he's already got this year.

So far, so good.

Maybe the crotch grab and the chokehold will become a welcome part of Naitude zeitgeist.

Count me in. Coupled with Dusty, I think this team has some attitude that had been lacking previously.

Mixed feelings about what I just saw.  Can't expect a closer to be perfect and he's still 5/6 but they have not been clean saves for the most part.  Papelbon's WHIP of 1.41 is not what you want to see from a closer.  The good news is that Rivero looks like he's ready to take over the 9th if Papelbon can't get it together.  Also, pretty weird that Papelbon was hitting 95 on the gun the first time he blew a save.  I wonder if he was feeling too strong after not pitching since the 13th.  This would also explain why he was missing up in the zone a lot.  Definitely a situation that will have to be monitored but not a cause for immediate concern if you're Dusty or Rizzo.  For us fans, it's definitely cause for a bit of nervousness though.

My thoughts exactly. I think Rivero or Treinen can take the role over if and when the time comes. I'm concerned but not necessarily worried just yet. Definitely something to keep an eye on and I'm sure Dusty and Rizzo are doing just that.

I like the 1-2 punch with matchups those two bring. If Paps needs to go, Giolito, Barrett, Lopez could all become options.

Giolito and Lopez are starters and Barrett likely won't be ready to go this season thanks to TJ.  Lopez also has an ERA of 4.09 in Harrisburg right now so he doesn't appear to be ready yet and there is zero chance the Nats will take Giolito out of a starter's routine since an injury to anyone on our staff means we very well may need him this season.  None of those options work.  Rafael Martin, Trevor Gott, Erik Davis, Nick Masset, and Matt Grace are all probably better options.  Martin had a great spring and Gott is probably a future closer and seemed to be the 9th bullpen piece in Spring (the 8th, Sean Burnett, is now a Dodger so Gott would probably be the first call up).  All of that said, this is incredibly hypothetical at this point.  Can't overreact to one blown save when your closer is 5/6.  The numbers to watch with Papelbon are the 1.41 WHIP and the .333 BAA (was 1.00 and .263 coming into today which is still not great for a closer).  If those numbers don't come down, then we may have to seriously consider these options.  If they do or if Papelbon keeps around a 5/6 pace, we should be fine.

Homie just threw fastball after fastball up and over the heart of the plate, can't really do that.

If he blew that game in DC, it would have been really ugly. I mean even uglier than it was. You know what I mean.

Fun Fact:  Papelbon is 1-2 with a 12.27 ERA and two blown saves in four appearances against the Phillies since the trade per Todd Zolecki on Twitter.  Those are not good numbers at all.

blown saves happen, this guy isn't going to be money but he's not Drew Storen. Least of our worries
