Defense at SS is far more important than defense at third base.

Yeah I know that.

You're right, he's not "very good." He's above average. The Royals won a World Series with an above average shortstop.

Batting leadoff, no less.

Espinosa's going to blow this season and I can't wait to see the vitriol and defenses for him this season when he's named the starter because of the quirks of the MLB service time system. Not in so many words, of course, but any way.

Espinosa would be an awesome leadoff guy.  (I threw up in my mouth as I typed that)

He would have to repeat his 2014 performance to not be a 1.5 WAR or more player as a full time short stop. He'll probably be top 5 defensively.

Could be a decent #9 in the AL!

Man you are in love with Espi :smh: if he could be so great at any position don't you think the team would have, you know, kept him at a position all year?
His offense doesn't really play at 2nd base.  If he was our starting SS last year, we would have won more games.

Defense at SS is far more important than defense at third base.
The fact that Tyler Moore has been taking grounders at third in spring training proves that.

Fixed that for you

I'll bet any of you haters that Espi finishes the year in top 3 in WAR for SS in the NL, and top 3 WAR for position players on the Nats, and helps our team to a successful year.   Hitting .240 with 20 HR with his defense at short would get him there, and that seems like a reasonable expectation.

I only see that happening if an injury occurs. Sometime in June, Turner is coming up and he isn't going back down. If the regular IF stays healthy, Danny won't be able to accrue that much WAR riding the pine.

There's no way we are bringing in such a green rookie at every day SS unless the team is sucking.

Or unless the rookie in question is actually pretty good.

I don't think he is ready to be a pretty good defensive major league short stop.  I think he'd be around the bottom third at best defensively.  There's good potential that he could hit better than Danny this year.  But he's not going to make up the defensive difference between them at that position.  Rendon, Espinosa, Murphy is probably a pretty good defensive infield who will make our starting pitchers better, make our starting pitchers go deeper into games, which in turn will make our bullpen better.  Rendon, Turner, Murphy is a below average defensive infield this year, and will tax our starters, lengthen innings, bring our  bullpen in before their rolls.  All those factor into at least a 10 win swing.  No way is Turner's offence going to make up that difference.  Not this year.

With espy in the lineup, you're punting offense at short and catcher. When Werth goes down, you better hope Taylor can hit a lot better than he did last year or going to have a lot of trouble scoring runs

The team's new excuse for Espinosa's lousy hitting is that the batting eye at Space Coast Stadium is sub-par, so he will only be playing road games for the rest of spring training.   :hysterical:
