Look at the link that HS posted for payrolls. If you click on the drop down for the year, the Nationals have $71M committed for 2018, the Yankees, $104M. For 2019, they both have $55M committed. And next year is a dumpster fire for free agents.
And the Yankees are willing to pay the luxury tax Harper. The Nationals are not.
And the Yankees are willing to pay the luxury tax.
The new Steinbrenners aren't.
They could have gotten pretty close to under it when Cano left after 2013 but instead signed McCann, Beltran, Ellsbury and Tanaka. They'll try to under the next CBA when the luxury tax expands to over $200 million.
It's not just the luxury tax, whether the Yankees must pay it or not. Probably a bigger issue: the Yankees now have competition from the Mets. Have not had much competition since the early '90s, when both teams were mediocre. The Mets went to the World Series, the Mets have four good starters, the Mets have a few hitters. About two years ago, the only zip-code with a majority of Met fans was a spot in Flushing Meadow Park. That's changing. It's not clear that the Yankees can wait while Texeira and ARod and other contracts drop away.
What defines "competition"? What's the competiton for? Isn't NYC big enough to take care of both of them? Is it more bragging rights and gear?As an outsider and a person who's in awe of the Apple market, I would think that there's plenty to go around.
Everyone in my wife's family (nyc and northern nj) is one or the other and despises the other team - same with jets Giants
There isn't any competition between the Yankees and Mets in the business sense of the word - they are not competing for fans. If you are a fan of the Yankees you don't switch because the Yankees aren't doing well and the Mets are, or vice versa. They may be competing for bragging rights. I'm sure the players don't care about that; they owners might, I suppose.
Who's on the left?
I'm sure you're kidding but I don't know you're kidding. More people would say who's that on the right than who's that on the left.
There are some here who pay no attention at all to basketball. Like me. I had to look up Seth Curry to see who he was.
