Goggles. Definitely goggles. Skin on your hand might scar. The surface of your eyes, though...

Oh yeah, it's nasty.  I have some heavy duty gloves for such purposes but errors can happen.  I would also recommend wearing a mitten when moving pans around a very shallow oven set at 450.    Cause those red hot coils are right there at knuckle height.    :icon_frown:

Missus showed up with a box of Bonchon chicken. Holy crap I feel like lighting a cigar.  That's going to become a regular part of the Nats game culinary rotation  :az:

Stopped by Willard's BBQ after hitting the home renovation show in Chantilly today.  Damn good, got the 2 meat platter - ribs and a sizeable portion of Carolina pulled pork, with beans, potato salad and cornbread on the side.  All 5 were excellent.  Love that they have proper NC vinegar sauce too.

Someone help me .... Every time I've gone to Willards I've found it to be rather poor.

BA is pretty grim in all cabins; Virgin in economy equally grim but PE is pretty good and Upper is great.
The Asian carriers are generally quite good but the best globally is Air New Zealand; their Economy is on par with other carriers' Economy Plus and their Business is close to the level of a non-suite First (but at business class prices, which puts them at #1 in my book).  In a true First Class, Singapore wins but really, Emirates, Qatar, RJ, JAL, etc are all pretty amazing.

But all the Asian and Middle Eastern carriers are state subsidized and by deregulating, the US pretty much ensured that our airline standards would never be as high as they were before, despite the taxpayers still subsidizing the industry in the form of all those bankruptcies, bailouts and pension write-offs. Anyway, it's no real surprise that JAL or Singapore makes United look like an old shoe.

In my experience BA still does a pretty good premium economy (World Traveller Plus) - for long-haul meals in that cabin you get a choice of two entrees from the Club World (business class) menu, and on departures from Heathrow you can make your selection online before checking in or boarding.

One meal I've had on recent BA and KLM flights is meatballs and mash with gravy - so simple it's beautiful (not to mention filling and tasty, something the airlines don't normally specialise in).

But you're right about US airlines - they're about shareholder value rather than passenger service. They aren't even on my radar when I book my travel - I haven't flown a US carrier long-haul in over thirty years.

I -love- the Bonchon spicy chicken on day one.  I am less of a fan of what it does to my insides on day two.  However, present me has zero problem being a jerk to future me, and when future me becomes present me, it can't remember what past me did to it.

Crispy Strips are pretty good (especially in Europe - I had some in Prague which were made spicier for the local taste, accompanied by perfect matchstick chips - very nice).

well, the KFC i visited was in WV, so maybe it 'was' engineered for the local tastes. :)

if that's the explanation, the market around here must prefer just this side of rancid meat

I've been to a couple of KFC's in this area - one in Glebe road just off Route 50* and the other about a kilometre or so west of Fairfax circle - and they haven't been bad. Still not up to the standard of the aforementioned Prague location though.

*which in a way may be the oldest KFC in this area - it was formerly the site of a Tops Drive In, a chain that had the rights to KFC in this area back in the 60's.

*Was that near the old Gino's on Glebe?

EDIT:   Google mapped it and it looks like the Gino's location is a McDonald's now.    The KFC is across the street (N. Cathedral).

It was that same general area (in fact Gino's, before Marriott bought them out, was the successor to Tops Drive In for the KFC rights in this area). But I still remember that Tops Drive in being on the same side of Glebe road as the present-day KFC.

Marriott must have bought out a lot of fast food franchises.   Didn't they buy Roy Rogers as well?
