I bet it was...
When we lived in Hawaii, my wife bought tickets to the last round of the Hawaiian Open every year for her father. I went with them the year Aoki holed out from the 18th fairway to win in '83. He took his shot from no more than 15 yards directly in front of us.
Brother-in-law and I had two conclusions: 1) They're good and 2) the course is more difficult in person than seeing it on TV. Oakmont is a great venue. I went to the '97 Open at Congressional with a media pass. We spent Friday with the "unwashed masses" at Oakmont. Since most of 'em were Western PA folks, I was among my element. No more than three of us were allowed to be together at any one time.
The public areas of the course were really muddy but the course itself was well maintained for the players. I could easily post a 100 at Oakmont .... and then play the back nine.
Saturday, we played at a local public course and the reality of golf hit home. I stink. She's a cruel mistress.
