David Bowie dead at the age of 69.

Sad day. He was quite an artist. They really kept his illness well hidden from the media.

I was listening to a report about his death this morning, and they were playing snippets of songs from his career.  It made me realize how many of his songs were part of the soundtrack of my life.

I followed his music pretty heavily through the mid to late 80s and more sporadically when the distribution networks became more decentralized and away from brick and mortar stores.  The word "visionary" is often used about Bowie's music.  It was not just  hype.  It seemed many of his songs predated music trends that came 3 -5 years later.  He was into performance and character themes when most acts were just get up and play or a few props (I'll defer to Mitlen on this).  "Heroes," which is somehow better in German, is a wonderful recording for its techniques.  The Berlin trilogy (Low, Lodger, and Heroes) blended rock and late 70s dance; danceable, but with strange guitar (Carlos Alomar, I think).  Before the Berlin trilogy, he had the Philly period with soul influence (Young Americans).  Ziggy Stardust, Diamond Dogs, Aladdin Sane (esp Panic in Detroit) were on constantly in college and after.

Of the many tributes I've seen this morning, one of the real standouts was "The world has lost something elemental today, as if an entire colour was suddenly gone".  Couldn't agree more.

The three text/vote songs at last night's Caps game were "Changes", "Heroes", and "Space Oddity", so I got a really weird feeling when I saw the news this morning.

Not necessarily a fan of the glitz but his music was the crapz.

He was unique no doubt, realized listening to clips of his songs this morning I liked him way more than I thought I did.

also because I'm OCD and neurotic and a crazy person, JCA can you start a new "2016" thread and break off the posts about Natalie Cole and David Bowie into it?
well, Cole was in 2015, so I moved your last post there and copied it here since it has Bowie content.

When I was 16 the signature of the Bowie fan was knowing when to put the air harmonica to your lips for the first lick in Golden Years. :)

An incredible talent. The original rock chameleon.

That about sums it up for me. Been strumming space oddity all day. That's my Bowie favorite. Followed by Changes and Ziggy Starsust.

Also remember the duet he did with Bing Crosby of the Little Drummer Boy many moons ago ago.

Not only did his songs predate where music would be going, this song predated the 2015 Nats bullpen:

Really sucks about David Bowie. My favorite of his was "Ashes to Ashes".

They say death comes in threes, and in quick succession we've had Scott Weiland from STP, Lemmy from Motorhead, and Bowie.

Jim Simpson died. Longtime DC and national sporstcaster.  http://espn.go.com/espn/story/_/id/14562344/hall-fame-sportscaster-jim-simpson-one-espn-first-dies-88

He was one of my favorite broadcasters.   The other night, I was listening to Dumb and Dumber (Nance and Simms) and I went through a list of announcers that I've liked over my lifetime.    Simpson was near the top of the list.

RIP Hans Gruber, one of the greatest movie villains of all time.
And that was his first-ever movie role.

At age 42. His first ever performance in a movie. Was Hans Gruber.

Alan Rickman was amazing.
