Because he's left handed.  He's one of the best lead off hitters in baseball, if not the best.  The team wins when he plays, period.

Also, he can likely be had for a short term, two years probably.  I wouldn't give him more than that.  At two years, he won't tie up money long term.

...and, most importantly, it gives Dusty fewer things to think about.  For Dusty to be at his best, the team should minimize the lineup decisions he has to make.

If Span signs a two year contract with another team, Rizzo should be fired, ie the only way we shouldn't sign him if he's so unhealthy that no other team will sign him or he wants a contract that's too long.

You're saying Dusty needs another black guy around or he'll accidentally bat Taylor leadoff?

Thank god...

FP should handle these Nationals press conferences...Rizzo is just so bad...

Oh Jeebus..."He's our second baseman...we're going to run him out there every day."  Does he never learn?

Why do people want Span back so badly? It's not like the dugout stairs has a ramp built in, and he's not going to be able to spin the wheels on his chair with a glove on one hand.

Well actually, there is a wheelchair lift in the dugout.

3 years, 30+ million plus an option for a 4th

I told you guys you were gonna like Murph. You could look it up. :P

On the other hand, he's gonna have you tearing your hair out when he bobbles routine grounders. But that's Murph. Clutch as hell, nobody else you want with a bat in hand with a game on the line, but you take the good (bat) with the wacky (glove).

we have seen Ean Desmond boot balls from Shortstop and K 200 times in big spots. 2B is nowhere near as important defensively and he's a far superior hitter

Desi's already got 10 strikeouts in 8 games, so he's well on pace for another 180 K season.  So nice not to have that automatic out in the lineup.

I would really like to see Dusty not use Drew as a PH and just go with den Dekker and Robinson most of the time, and use Drew as a defensive sub late for Murphy.
