The 2005 Kentucky Derby was the 131st running of the Kentucky Derby. The race took place on May 7, 2005

ex-Nat Paul Lo Duca told the story today about him betting the Kentucky Derby and making a lot of money on the winner named Giacomo.

He said that he had to bet the race early because the Marlins scheduled their game vs the Rockies to start at 4pm that Saturday.  This would place the start of the race during the Marlins/Rockies game. He had told the clubhouse guys to let him know when the race was close to starting.  During one of the innings with the Rockies hitting a clubhouse guy motioned to Lo Duca that the horses were loading into the starting gate.  Lo Duca said that when the Rockies were retired he sprinted into the clubhouse stripping off his catching gear to catch the race on TV.  Lo Duca arrived with the horses in the back stretch of the race.  He said the clubhouse was a loud place to be and then erupted with cheers from himself and the clubhouse guys when Giacomo came charging home from far back to win.

He said that quite a few of the Marlins players and staff had followed his suggestion and bet on the horse too.  He and the people in the clubhouse were still celebrating and high fiving the victory.  Suddenly Dontrelle Willis runs into the clubhouse and tells Lo Duca that the game is delayed waiting for him to bat.  Lo Duca runs up the tunnel grabs his helmet and bat and rushes to the plate.  When he gets there the plate umpire Mike Winters asks how he did.  Seems that Lo Duca had told Winters that he might be late at some point of the game due to the Derby.  Catching for the Rockies is Todd Greene and Lo Duca tells about what is up and he starts laughing.  Lo Duca hits a RBI Sac fly during the at bat off pitcher Shawn Chacon giving the Marlins a 1-0 lead.  When he gets back to the dugout his teammates are more excited about their Derby winnings than the Sac fly.

Lo Duca who is a horse racing analyst(he is good) on the TVG Network said it was the biggest payout he has ever cashed.
