He far too nice a guy to say so publicly, but there is no way he was cool with playing 2nd fiddle to Strasburg despite being better in 2013 and 2014. Strasburg and him probably are fine with each other, and the former never asked for the glory and scrutiny that comes with being a prodigy, but this and other comments remind me that Zimmermann has a small-town sense of fairness. If you're better, you pitch opening day, first game back after the ASB, and first day of the playoffs. He was. He didn't. He wants to go where he is the ace. I respect that because where 2013-2014 are concerned,  I agree with him.

I believe that is probably true. I posted on this site that he should have pitched opening day two times over Strasburg because he earned it. If that was his only gripe it didn't warrant defecting. I do think the FO has reasons that we will never know starting with the TJ surgery.

Even after two off years, Justin Verlander is still the ace and opening day starter for Detroit.

Well, he's not as good as Strasburg, so there's that.

He was better in 2014 and should have started the first game. We then would have won that game and probably the series.

I bet he's got a "do not pull in a playoff game with two outs in the ninth" clause in his contract.

He's a quiet, reserved guy from Wisconsin so that's about as salty as he'd probably be in public but I definitely read that as him being miffed he wasn't viewed more highly by clubs, I would think that includes the Nats as well.
He signed for five million more. The Nationals offered fair market.

You can read in to that all you want, but if he thinks he deserved to be anyone's number 1 target, he's delusional. I guarantee he wasn't the Tigers number 1 target, they just couldn't afford the others.

That has nothing to do with his spot in the rotation, but that for the Tigers he was their top priority and for other team not so much.

Not so much salt as milktoast.

The Nats sent out a "Thank you Jordan" tweet shortly before he signed with Detroit.

Bet Zimmermann has a verbal agreement that he is starting that game.

there is no way they would start him over Verlander. and if that is something he brings up in negotiation it is pretty ridiculous and petty.

Is it that different to Pap making sure he's the closer before allowing the trade?

Yes. Drew Storen has accomplished nothing in his career. Justin Verlander has.

Right - one man's "small town sense of respect and fairness" sounds an awful lot like another man's "small town sense of pettiness and myopia".

If Zimmermann left a team because he didn't get to start a game or whatever, and begrudged a long-term teammate for getting that honor, then good riddance.

I want to play at that casino.
He won the gamble. He bet on himself and underperformed, but not so badly that it cost him what we offered, so that's coming out ahead.
