Rich Hill

Who knew that he was part of the Nats AAA relief corps at Syracuse this past season. In June he asked for his release since the Nats weren't promoting him.

Now, he's a $6M/year starter.

I would think that he could have been helpful in the bullpen looking at his minor league numbers and the poor performance from guys like David Carpenter and Casey Janssen....

Rich Hill sucked in Syracuse. He had about 5 seasons on the docket of suck. He had 29 innings of good last year.

His minor league stats: http://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.cgi?id=hill--002ric

Pitched 29 innings with Boston last season. Baseball Ref shows him in a Nats uniform, but I don't think he threw a pitch for Washington. Maybe in spring training? MLB stats:

It was interesting, at least, to have Taylor Hill, Rich Hill, Taylor Jordan, and Michael Taylor in the organization. But not a single player named "Mickey" (as in Vernon or Mantle) or Bobo (as in Newsom).

Rich Hill struck out 32 guys in 21 innings at Syracuse.
Unfortunately, he also walked 21 guys in 21 innings.

What the Red Sox did to kill his walk rate is unknown - unless his performance in either Syracuse or Boston is a giant fluke.

He looked good in spring training, but not steal someone's job good.

He looked good in spring training, but not steal someone's job good.

...and there was not head-thwacking competition among relief pitchers.

I'm just sad we can't do Michael Taylor Jordan Zimmermann anymore.
