Not sure if anyone caught the Seth Everett interview with Chad Dukes the other day. He essentially said that Dusty is a great fit, though he thought Black would have been a better one. Talked about how in Cincinnati Bryan Pena basically made all the calls on the pitching stuff. Gotta think that's why Maddux got tabbed and will fill a similar role. From that perspective, the two might work really well together.

Bryan Pena was his name while in the Mexican Witness Protection Program.

This is incredible, I can't believe we actually landed Maddux.

I can't believe it but I think I'm really turning around on this whole thing. Maybe this is part of the reason why they lowballed Black, according to the story they really did want Dusty first (the Lerners, that is) and they certainly did get him after the ensuing turnabout. "Who needs Black, we have Maddux"?

So, obviously Dusty is supposed to be some clubhouse guru. That's one half of the manager's job. We got Mike Maddux, and that alleviates my greatest fear about Dusty in that he basically knows nothing about pitching. As long as, of course, he listens to Mike word for word. That should cover the bullpens and the starters (including their health - :phew:), that's half of what goes on in a game. Now if only Dusty will listen to some careful prodding from some of the saber guys in the front office about lineup construction (appreciate OBP) and defense (which this team never did well anyway, shifts etc) this could actually turn out to be a phenomenal staff.

Dusty's the guy making the final decision which still makes me real nervous, but frankly I was worried Bud Black knew nothing about offense. I think Dusty certainly knows more about developing hitters and getting production out of them (as individuals, lineup construction is another thing) than Black did, Maddux plus Black might have been pointless because either can probably do that side of the job on their own.

Depending on how the rest of the offseason shakes out, I might actually renew my one-seat cheapo partial plan...
Well, pitching coaches can help on stuff, who to get up in the pen, and the like, but the manager is always going to make the call in the NL on whether the pitcher needs to be pulled because of the connection with other positions.  In the AL, I could see a pitching coach being in total control of that portion of the game, but in the NL, Baker will make the call, hopefully with a ton of input.

I've been concerned about the offense and fielding as much as pitching.  I hope he just listens to good coaches and the video /scouting / analytical guys and blends that info into his judgments.

It's probably like other levels of baseball. You think he's done? Me too.

Sometimes managers listen, sometimes they don't.

Dusty seems to be a little confused about his previous records. He mentioned his managing style worked before with 90 win seasons, a lot of upper 90 win seasons.

20 seasons
8 seasons >= 90 wins
4 seasons >= 95 wins

Yep. Talked about The Doors, quoted Nelson Mandela, referenced knowing Obama, praised the D.C. area's diversity, made some Zen-like comments about love being the answer and mind over matter (literally).

A Phil Jackson like vibe.

Rizzo is a stutterer.  He controls it well, and if you can get by that, I think he's a very good speaker.  He has alot to say. Williams had nothing to say.

It's beyond that...he is uncomfortable, repeats himself and actually has nothing to say...it's all trite, and he lacks poise.

Discussing the Papelbon/Harper incident was his worst performance.  He was lost.

We aren't being paid millions to manage the situation.

When you're in charge, you need to take command.  He was flustered...not a sign of stable leadership.

every coach/executive in sports is expected to be able lie to the media with a straight face- not everyone is as good as belichick discussing the dominance of Redskin's special teams, but it's something they all have to do

We have a town full of politicians.  You'd figure he'd be able to find a good lying coach or maybe even a press spokesman for these interviews.

Rizzo freaked up big time with the deadline fiasco, having only Papelbon to show for it.  But he didn't realize how big a freakup it was until the choke incident, which was one of the most bizarre baseball incidents I've ever seen.  I give him a pass for being flustered.  (No pass, however, for creating the fiasco.)
