Brian Kenny hates the hire.
Brian Kenny hates everything that isn't analytical.

Rizzo freaked up big time with the deadline fiasco, having only Papelbon to show for it.  But he didn't realize how big a freakup it was until the choke incident, which was one of the most bizarre baseball incidents I've ever seen.  I give him a pass for being flustered.  (No pass, however, for creating the fiasco.)

How many people are going to ignore that Rizzo wasn't the root of screwing up the trade deadline? We now all know the Lerners would not give him the money needed to trade for a rental and he had to settle oin Papeldouche.

I believe Rizzo had any number of irons in the fire and was thwarted.     Papelbon was his last option.

It's well known that you can't succeed with a measley $165 million payroll

Baker seems like the exact type of guy that can keep the clubhouse loose and having fun. Very similar to Davey in that regard. But is he going to make the right decisions late in games in crunch time? That is the big question right now. I suppose we shall see. I do think under Baker we won't have as many guys underachieving though.

I'm starting to come around on Dusty.  He seems legitimately psyched to be here.

So is Zimmerman going to be the one to save his son from a collision at home plate this time?

for anyone wondering if Baker had a role in the Lopes hiring

Quote
Lopes, who managed the Brewers from 2000-02, played with Baker in Los Angeles for six seasons, and is his daughter Natosha’s godfather.

looks like dusty has at least some say in his staff

Brian Kenny and MLB Now is my favorite mlb network show.  I bet they can't wait to see how Dusty manages and will be all over him when he does something wrong.  I really hope that they go with an advanced stats guy for bench coach so that he can give Dusty the dinosaur another option to consider as far as strategy goes.

He could also not have traded for Paps, but he did.  Was the assistant that got fired the same guy that did homework on Papelbon?  I don't remember his name, but I'm sure someone had to lose their job over it.

I feel the same way. I wasn't excited at first, but the more I see, the more I'm liking it.

I didn't get to watch the whole press conference (anyone have a link?) but from what I saw he absolutely was excited to be here.  He has a healthy ego and is very confident about his abilities, but also has the record to back that up.  It also seemed clear that he wants a World Series championship very badly, and that he feels this is his last and best chance to do it.  As he said, this is finally his opportunity to do more with more.

He absolutely owned that room, and personality-wise he couldn't be more different than MW.  That's a big plus right there.  He also commands a lot of respect in the game, something MW also lacked, and that should translate into fixing our broken clubhouse.  Unfortunately, when you examine his record, some of his in-game decision making is reminiscent of MW's rigid thinking.  That's worrisome.

I'm pleased so far with the coaches, and with Dusty at the helm, and we should have our pick of experienced savvy coaches who want to work with him.  Dusty appears to be self-confident enough not to be threatened by surrounding himself with strong coaches.  If the rest of the coaching staff is as strong as the first picks, I think Dusty will be more likely to listen to their advice by virtue of their experience.  He seems like a pretty self-aware guy and is not stupid, and I would imagine that he wants to pick the best brains possible.

If things go well next year, he'll be the toast of the town.  But if things go poorly, his act could get real old real fast.

Neither was I, but I actually am getting excited now...

...looking forward to 2016...

...that last part sounded very Matt Williams like, so I am a bit ashamed.   :-[

Brian Kenny hates everything that isn't analytical.

It was actually one of Kenny's low points since I've been watching him.  First he went back to individual decisions that Baker made during the playoffs without offering other options.  He did one of the things he's, apparently bogusly, preached against, judging a decision based on the result.  Next, he just flat out assumed that Baker would reject analytics or as he put it, "He'll ignore some kid with a piece of paper."  Finally, he compared this hiring to the Red Sox hiring Valentine, ie if he was so great why wasn't he hired before.  First, Valentine was out of the majors for 10 seasons, Baker was out for 2 and Baker was far more accomplished as a manager than Valentine.  It's not even close.

In fairness, the bullpen clearly needed something at that point in the season and Papelbon was having one of the best seasons of his career so it's not like the move was bad at the time.  Hindsight is 20/20 but I liked the move at the time (as I suspect most of us did) so I have trouble criticizing it too much now.

Also anyone who calls for Dusty Baker to get fired ever (no matter how bad it gets on the field) will have a man card revoked because the man literally invented the "high five."  Given that and the fact that he once smoked a joint with Jimi Hendrix, should you call for his firing, Barney Stinson will personally show up at your house to retrieve said man card.

Will my woman card be revoked as well?

Is that a serious question?  It's 2015.  Of course your woman card will also be revoked.

Rumor has it that they're waiting to see if Dave Roberts gets the LA job, otherwise it'll be Speier and they'll find a 3rd base coach
