And the really good ones would drink during the game.  Maybe Stras needs to try that.
Players were totally tougher then, can you imagine a player from that era taking a night off because they've "tweaked" their neck?  Buncha pansies out there now for the most part :oldy:

I don't think there has ever been a pitcher bounced around like Roark has been that's been able to do well.  You can't be starter/long man/regular one inning reliever/long man/starter/regular reliever over and over again and succeed, you just can't.  Every single pitcher I've heard interviewed has said knowing what their role will be is paramount to their success; Roark has had no clue this year, and it shows and it makes me terribly sad for him.

I chalk that one up to two things:
A: Baseball tropes. You are coached on how to answer interview questions by the team, your agent, whatever.
B: If you are getting bounced around from role to role, it means you keep failing at the role they slot you into - which is a sign that you're not doing well because you're not doing well.

This will forever be his legacy:

This dates back to his most egregious yank, that of Jordan Zimmermann last year in the NLDS.

It didn't seem to hurt Walter Johnson.

That's the same bullcrap that was used to defend Jason Bergmann (who was also overrated by certain fans).

Good proxy for an average pitcher.

Too bad Fister was no longer the dominant Mr. Fister on the mound every fifth day. There's no question Joe Ross gives the Nats a better chance to win at this point in the season. It will be interesting to see how this plays out through the end of the month and into September/October, the organization obviously has an innings limit they would like to adhere to, but what will actually happen? Stay tuned Nats fans....

Zim looked bad in the 8th and in the 9th. Posey could have homered.

Drew Storen is a choker the likes of which this city will never forget, he killed the Nats in '12 and '14, he needs to get one freaking out. In the 8th, he never flinches. He's got the stuff but not the mentality for the 9th.

Also, in 9 more innings against relief pitching the Nats failed to notch one run, or even a handful of hits, so...

No clue who defended Bergmann or why but here's the thing, Roark pitched 198.2 innings in 2014 to a 2.85 ERA so he kind of was actually good and now he's been bounced around a bunch this year suddenly he's not; the most innings Bergmann pitched was 139.2 to a 5.09 ERA and aside from 2005 when he only pitched 19 innings he never had an ERA below 4.45 so he really never proved he was any good, not a bit, so it doesn't really seem this is the same bullcrap at all.

ah I'd often seen the "beachball" reference but he pitched just before I started following team so I wasn't around for all of that so that was fun to read and he seemed like a pretty cool dude, thanks for sharing that

we used to have a small beachball emoticon on page 2 but Chief must have pruned it to make room for more.

Move that had to be made if this team is going to get serious about the fact that this division is going to be a fight, rather than the massacre everyone expected at the beginning of the season.  You can't have someone putting up the numbers Ross is putting up and leave him out of the rotation in a pennant race because of some ill-conceived loyalty to a veteran.  This decision had to be made.  There really wasn't a choice.

I dont like it. Rather have fister as a starter and see if he can regain his form from last season. Fister is an ace in this leagur when hes on

Fister sucks. Doug Fister 2013 was a long time ago and he was never an ace
