I had Technics gear...left it with a friend with all my vinyl in Hawaii when we moved in 1985.

A friend of mine had a Bang-Olufson system...that was the tits...

In 1985, we put 22, IIRC, boxes on United Airlines and for $6 - $12 each, again IIRC, depending on size/weight, we moved to Florida.  The vinyl I had was far too heavy to tote so it stayed behind.

Every once in awhile I crank up some of the old stuff.    In-a-gadda-da-vida (all 17 plus minutes) brings out the neighbors.

I have the single "Tell Me" off the 1st album.     

I did not realise they wrote that one. You are quite correct.

I think it was about 5 or 6 before they were writing more than half the songs.

For the Beatles that was right away.

You know, albums turned me off for one big reason. When I was a kid, the thing I was most likely to pull out of the parental music collection was classical.  Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture is my favorite piece and it drives me nuts not to be able to listen to it at a reasonable volume without some weird dance of strategically placing pennies on the album to prevent skips and jumps when the cannons fire.

Same basic problem with the Victory At Sea records.

This would have been a late 70's ginormous Dolby rig.  I don't remember any other details as I was all of about 6-7 years old.  Was still very disappointing that the bass from the speakers would cause that kind of jump.

Was it a one piece unit?     I've never heard of bass from speakers (properly separated) causing a needle to jump.    Usually the jump is caused by warped albums or bad scratches.    Or somebody being drunk and trying to dance too close to the turntable.

Speakers that rest right on the floor are bad for that, as are tables that sit right on a piece of hard furniture.

I bought new speakers that come on a stand. The feet are rubber buffers, and the stand has another rubber buffer that holds the speaker. Ain't nothing skipping that record.

The old one piece cabinets always had floating tables. You could push on them and feel the shocks. At least mine did.

The speakers were on the floor and that's probably what did it. And I remember a little more clearly now. The Dolby one did have a pretty hard to skip turntable; it was only 1812 Overture at high volume (4th of July tradition) that could make it skip. Get a recording with real 105s and it's pretty thunderous.  The record player I -hated- was a JVC unit we got when we moved to Okinawa and left the giant Dolby system back Stateside for weight allowance reasons. That thing was just rubbish.

The turntable should be isolated from any vibrations.  Buy some soft insulating foam and put it under the turntable feet, under the turntable platform, whatever it is, and make sure the speakers themselves are isolated from the floor by some vibration absorbing material.
