I had heard Fedde projected as a bullpen arm. MLB pipeline says his ETA is 2018. Seems like a good deal for us but he's probably only one piece.

I'd rather get 3 1/2 years of Kimbrel than 1 1/2 of Chapman when next year might be a bit of a re-tooling year, but they could always flip Chapman in the offseason (or keep him if the Mets continue to flounder in offensive obscurity in 2016), and Chapman is a lefty, so Storen's ego might hurt less if they share closer time with matchups in mind. You could also bring Chapman in as your fireman in the 5th, 6th or 7th and let Storen close. Imagine: bringing in your best reliever in the most tense part of the game. It almost makes sense.

Indeed, if there is a "retooling year" we're in it. Especially regarding the replacement of Span with Taylor and of Fister with Ross.

Yeah, I don't know why anyone would expect next year to be significantly different from this year.

Reasons to be more pessimistic for 2016
Losing Zimmermann and Span
Scherzer is at mega-peak level and is likely to regress

Reasons to be more optimistic for 2016
Almost certain to get more out of the SS position (-0.6 WAR so far)
Almost certain to get more than we've gotten to this point out of Rendon, Werth and Zimmerman.
Probably will not get less out of the 3/4/5 slots in the rotation (4 WAR total from those slots)

Alex Speier speculates about whether the Red Sox would move Brock Holt. A cheaper version of Zobrist with good health and many years of team control. Red Sox might view him as blocked long term everywhere, depending on where they hide Fat Panda and Hanley. Of course, Uehara, Napoli and Victorino are the names that are more frequently mentioned.

Cishek would have filled our 8th inning slot quite nicely, he's been fine since coming back from AAA after having a rough start to the year.

Cardinals got Cishek for dirt cheap - a "prospect" who is walking 17% of batters in the mid-minors.

If that kind of relief help is that cheap, we should call the Padres and get Maurer and Quackenbush. Kimbrel, too. But I want Quackenbush because his name is Quackenbush.

John Lamb is the big piece. He profiles as a back of the rotation starter. Finnegan isn't ever going to be a starter and has shoulder issues that'll probably plague him forever. Good bullpen arm but lots of risk.

I am so perplexed by the Padres looking to deal James Shields. If you were only looking to make a run this year and rebuild if it didn't work out, then why the hell did you give him a long term contract you stupid craps?!

Per Cot's, he's owed $65MM over the next 3 years (counting the option year buyout of $2MM; option is for $18MM). If he happens to pitch well and is cheap relative to his perceived market, he can opt out after next year. so you have to assume there's no way you get $65MM of value from him over the next 3 years. You might get a surplus this year and next so you might view him as a bargain and rotation stability. He has not pitched badly (ERA jumped but xFIP is down). BABIP is up playing in front of that defense, and HRs are up (were suspiciously low in KC). Ks are way up (again, in front of that defense, the K is your friend) and BBs are up (don't really want the ball in play).
