Nospin was a bit of a nut but he sure left a treasure trove of great stuff here.

He was a classic.     Loved his all caps.    :)

A nut job...

von Bargen suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his Montgomery apartment in February 2012. He told a 911 operator he didn't want to go to surgery to have toes removed due to diabetic complications.

This kind of story makes one wonder if he was really going to have surgery to remove the toes or if he was just imagining it.
Anyways I enjoyed him on Seinfeld. Rest in peace.

I could see where that would be true, one of the older partners at my firm had to have like a portion of his foot cut off due to diabetes, he had to use this scooter thing to get around for a long time, I could tell he was totally bummed out about it. Losing a few toes may not sound like much but it was hard for him and I'm sure there's the worry it's only the beginning of the complications :(

NoSpin was able to have friends on both sides of the political spectrum in spite of his very strong conservative beliefs.  I was very glad that both Kim Luckabaugh and I were able to represent wnff at his funeral.

Terry Pratchett finally lost his fight with Alzheimer's.  Am glad that the books were up to his usual quality right to the end. Steam did a wonderful job of exploring the progress of technology and the danger of allowing an ultra-orthodox minority to create the public perception of your people.

When I was a kid, I played 3rd base on a LL team called the Indians.    This guy was an early idol:

You either like it or you hate it. I happen to like (most of) it quite a lot.  I think Thud!, Snuff and Steam do a very good job of digging into social/racial issues.  I think Steam and Jingo do a good job of skewering how easily we write off other cultures.  Making Money apparently does a better job of explaining modern economics and the Fed better than most text books.

While the series as a whole does make reference to earlier books on occasion, you can honestly pick up darn near any book and enjoy it.  Again, I would strongly recommend Thud! as a good one to pick up. If you don't like that, don't bother. If you do, any of the others I mention above will work for you.

The only Pratchett I've read is a book co-written with Neil Gaiman, Good Omens. If you like Douglas Adams, you'll love it without doubt: a wild romp about Satan misplacing the Antichrist and rogue angels trying to stop the apocalypse.

Good Omens is fantastic and the writing is very much Discworld-esque without the pseudo medieval setting.

Thanks, I'll grab the free preview on my kindle and if it goes well, I'll pick it up, it's only $3.99 anyway.
