With the numbers Span is putting up so far this season, he will almost certainly price himself out of coming back here.  I don't think we're going to want to pay a lot of money for a speedster on the wrong side of 30 but, as the Michael Bourn deal shows us, someone clearly will.  That means the job is almost certainly Taylor's in 2016 so it's good to see he has some of the clutch gene that made the 2012 and 2014 Nats a lot of fun to watch.

Taylor's job next year for sure, agreed.

My question is this: what do we do with the Desmond & Zim  (and Span) money that is saved?

Roark gets a spot in the staff I would think. We need another bat (preferably OF) and a SS/2B.

I would certainly work hard to get Span to re-sign at a rational price. Our white whale has performed as advertised. Taylor can take Werth's place as he declines.

McClouth is a good contributor but just needs to play on a regular basis. Matt Williams hasn't used him right since they signed him. I get the impression that relationship never started off on the right foot either.

They probably sign another starter, a strong 4th outfielder, and probably a midlevel middle infielder who can hold his own until Turner or Difo is ready. Would not be surprised if they spent a little extra money for a big 3rd base bat due to concerns about Rendon health.

Past that, I'm fine with the Nats holding onto payroll flexibility. Never know when a big bat or arm can be available midseason.

We put it in the bank for the inevitable 10 year, $360 million Bryce Harper deal I would imagine.

I could see Heyward being a guy Rizzo would like.  Stellar defense, still does have massive offensive potential and is hitting free agency as a 27 year old I believe.  Any team that gets him will be getting his prime, offensively at least.  I want Taylor to start for sure and Harper's a lock in the outfield.  Werth, however, has been underwhelming and injured.  I know the injuries likely have to do somewhat with the poor performance, but he is old and old players decline and have their bodies break down.  Werth's presence should not stop us from adding an impact bat in the outfield.

Span settles the outfield. He contributes. Werth is 36...who else plays LF, if not Taylor?

The key is at a rational price.  I think we need to open up the pocketbook and make him an offer that matches his value. Desi is leaving, Zimm is leaving, a few other contracts are ending. We will have some cash to spend. I'm not saying that we match some crazy offer he might get, but don't lowball this guy. He has been a solid contributor.

Give him the QO. Another year at that is good. A draft pick is good.

Werth could become a DH on an AL team

Zim and Werth are going to stand on 1B together
