Hah, don't you know that a restaurant in DC is a full star higher just by virtue of jurisdiction?
That being said I will concede that it's not easy to find decent BBQ in the DMV these days. I get down towards Indian Head from time to time and the BBQ down that way is legit without the needledick influence at all. Georges in Indian Head, Slab o ribs in Bryans Road, and always have a soft spot for the drive in BBQ sandwiches at B&J Carry Out in Accokeek. You have to request the slaw to be NOT on the sandwich, as the default is on, as it should be. 
Finding good bbq here is just about finding a place with a regional style you like, DC has people from everywhere and no two regions agree on what BBQ is. Personally I think Rocklands is fine, Pork Barrell has gotten really good and Dizzy Pig in Mannassas makes the best rubs around (if you're too lazy to do it yourself)
