Got my first paycheck

Decided to take my wife to the Bavarian Chef in Fredericksburg for a late lunch on the way to the Caps game...to celebrate your first paycheck, of course.  Enjoying an Oktoberfest ale while I wait for my Knackwurst Platter.

Had my second interview this morning. Once again I have no idea how I did, but I don't feel I blew it, at least.

They said they were planning to make offers very soon, as early as next week, so I guess I'll know one way or the other soon enough......

Haven't heard anything from them and I'm trying not to let it weigh on my mind and push me back into a depressed state.

Nope...didn't even know about this one until you mentioned it here...

Outstanding food and a really nice place...

Time seems to slow down when you are waiting for an offer.

Not really sure how the interview went. Think I'd like the office. Not sure I'd like the work. It's very low level stuff. On top of that, there may be a pay cut involved and the commute would be longer.

In other news, my company VP came up to visit last week. Apparently she was surprised by how expensive parking was in Crystal City. So now there's  a stipend for full time employees :D

I thought you just started a new job and got your first paycheck? Why are you interviewing elsewhere already?

Because it was offered. Could take months to get the job. I applied in October.

Oh jeez.  Government work? I've heard that can take years to process through the red tape.

I only switched jobs four times in my career. However two of those came within three months. One offer came later than the other and when my bosses at the first job I accepted seemed to want to play with me (for instance telling me I needed to produce as much as my colleagues with fewer quality and quantity of staff) I accepted the second offer.  The first place was not too happy but you gotta do what you gotta do.

Eh, then I may as well get started

Changing companies is pretty normal in the DC area. You go where the work is. My Dad has probably worked for a dozen companies in the last 40 years.

I just tend to see getting new jobs within six months as a warning when I review resumes. I can agree there are different approaches and this area can be especially changeable. My experience with the IT field is if you find a company that gives you respect and the clients don't tick you off too much, it's better to stay. An extra 20k isn't worth the intangibles sometimes.

You make a valid point.  I never left a position for more money.  I always left for better opportunities.

I held my last position for over 21 years...

If I read his posts accurately, Slate is simply keeping his options open.  Always a good idea, IMHO...

I've never been a job changer, but I've never been a driven career guy either.  I'm sure I could have maxxed out my career more if I'd have aggressively sought out new opportunities a few times.

My career post college graduation:

1 10 years with a bank holding company
2 10 more years with an IT company that had outsourced the data center I worked for in the bank, so really a 20 year tenure.
3  3 years with Quest Diagnostics
4  5 years with a small pharma company that ultimately sold out
5  6 years with my current drug company

That's it.   5 companies in 34 years.  9 more years to go.

I think we had some very tangential professional crossing of paths with #4. That was a good company with an interesting product as I recall, so gobble gobble, big fish eats little fish.
