Trading a potential future ace for a relief pitcher that isn't lights out is asinine. Only person I see as that is Greg Holland.

That first trade is horrid then and even more now since he plays for their rival And they didn't win anything.

The Nats don't have prospects to trade for relief pitching. Assume Giolito, Lopez, Difo, and Turner are untouchable...and Turner is legally untouchable until he become a member of the organization.

That leaves Ross, and we haven't seen enough of Ross to know much, and Tony Renda. I'm not sure a team would trade a major league pitcher for Renda.

Rizzo is testing minor league starters. That suggests no team wants to trade. Maybe Goodwin starts to hit and by the trade deadline the worst team in baseball (Oakland???) might be willing to offload a veteran relief pitcher. However, Billy Beane is the guy who traded away HRod.

Less. So Joe Ross would do nicely. Issue is, Rizzo thinks Storen is THE GUY. Which means he won't pick up someone who is obviously better and deserves the closing job.

That's actually pretty amazing. In 2010, sandwiched between two years where Jesus Montero was a consensus top 5 prospect, KC turned him down for a RP?

It's also a cautionary tale on both sides. It shows not all prospects work out (thus cautionary to give your proven players for prospects) but also from the other side, because the Yankees would have given up a top-5 prospect for a RP who had a 4.03 ERA the following year, then TJ surgery. YMMV with RPs.

not to mention that a catcher with a big bat for a catcher better stick at catcher or that bat is worth a lot less at any other position

Btw I heard that the only other team that really, REALLY wanted Trout was the Yankees, who had Trout #2 on their board after Strasburg. But the Angels picked him in the nick of time. The Angels themselves actually picked somebody else ahead of Trout!
