Lucky stiffs.  Why couldn't it have been Guzman?

We are just NOT getting the breaks this season.

Do you know how many different ways there are of being tested positive? After his swearing he never purposely took steroids at the hearings, there is no one stupid enough to risk getting caught by taking them.

I think he didn't take steroids, at least not knowingly, and with all the things sold over the counter that contain a banned substance, I doubt very much he's guilty of anything except not being cautious enough when taking over the counter medications or food supplements.

I think he's innocent... I also think he's being the good sportsman he is by taking this the way he is.

None of us are in a good position to evaluate the merits of his denial.  I accept at face value that banned substances were detected in sufficient quantities as to fail the test.

The problem is, it's my understanding that part of the agreement (between the league and players) is that they are prohibited from disclosing exactly what substance was found.  Hence, it leaves us guessing at the possible sources of inadvertent ingestion.  Medical test results are scrupulously guarded, protected by law under HIPAA, so it will take a very intrepid reporter indeed to ferret out the triggering substance.  Without knowing what it was, we speculate so wildly that there's really no benefit to doing so.  (It was his eye drops!!) etc.

I'm guessing that since he was unable to identify what it was he ingested, he doesn't have a ready alibi.  I would feel a lot better if he showed us his bottle of GNC nutritional supplements and a receipt from 3 months ago, and could demonstrate a link to the identified substance.

If I had to guess, I'd say his lack of alibi tells me he's probably guilty, and just wants to get on with things.  But that's just an uneducated guess.

As an interesting aside, I attended my first Orioles game of the season Friday night, guest of a business associate in a very nice suite.  I made a comment during the game that Raphy looked smaller to me than I remembered him.  Guess not small enough.

Mr. Palmeiro, Did you or did you not tell congress that you didn't take steriods

Palmeiro: "It depends on what your definition of "taking steriods" is."

It was the Viagra.  As they say, it strengthens at least one muscle.

That is a frightening thought---what if Guzman was the one caught? What would his average be WITHOUT steroids?

I'm just lovin this quote from today's column by Thom Loverro in the Washington Times:

In today's climate in baseball -- particularly when you have been brought before Congress because of claims you used steroids -- if you took anything more than a Flintstones vitamin, you are an idiot.

Palmeiro opted for the idiot defense yesterday, using the crazy man defense to support his claim that he did not knowingly take steroids

The Post is reporting this morning that a knowledgabe source told them it was a "serious steroid", nothing that could be picked up on a bagel or eye drops.

Sorry Raphy, you fooled us once, but never again.

I actually have postulated the idea that, before this season, Guzman was on the juice and he's not now.  That's why he's had such a big dropoff.

If he had been hitting triples off of the wall then you would have an arguement but Guzmans key to success was his ability to hit balls through the infield and between the outfielders on the concrete floor covered by a carpet at the Metrodome.  The ground balls now are being fielded because they are going through real grass and the singles that he does manage to get now are being fielded on one hop instead of rolling to the wall.

that sounds all good and all but whether on astroturf or grass when you hit straight to an infielder or pop it up the same thing happens in both circumstances.
